I'm soon going to 'try' and replace my TD5 mud flaps and brackets.
After reading about how badly it can go, I've decided to get the tools I may need now.

Could you please recommend me a rivnut tool?
There are quite a few on eBay and wasn't sure if the £12 one is upto any sort of job.

Check the sizes they go up to.

all the cheap ones I have seen do not go to a large diameter.

You can make a rivnut tool using a few washers , nuts and a long bolt., If you look there are videos on Youtube showing how to make one.

A said you can use a nut and bolt to set the rivnut, the alloy rivnuts are much easier to set than the steel ones, whichever you use grease the bolt well so you can get it undone in the future.
The cheap tools are pretty ****e.
 
I've got a rivnut tool, it didn't cost much and had it for years, it's like a glorified riveter. does what it says on the tin. For the limited number of times I need to use it I see no need for anything fancier or more expensive.
 
A long all threaded bolt the same size as the rivnut, a washer, a nut and two spanners. And a bit of grease should do it. Screw nut onto bolt apply washer apply grease to nut and washer. Screw bolt into rivnut. Apply rivnut to hole. Hold bolt with one spanner tighten nut with other one.

Doubt if the £12 one will be great quality, it might last long enough to do a set of alloy rivnuts for the brackets.

I have an Eclipse, think it was about £40, had it for years, it has been fine.
 
The long handled ones arent much cop in tight quarters.
I think land rover mainly used the alloy rivnuts especially for add on like the rear ladder etc.
My rivnut toll has to be well over 15 years old and has set loads at work and home.

If you have used and enjoyed the std cheap pop rivet guns! with equally cheap rivets you will get the jist of what the cheap rivnut tool is like.
For a one off job you cant beat the nut and bolt trick mentioned in the first reply to your question.
