Replacing air con condenser on P38

Look a RAVE for the sequence of removing bits, you have to remove the intercooler on the diesel to make room to remove the condensor. Make sure you keep the pipe ends very clean, I covered mine with cling film held in place with rubber bands.
A secondhand condensor does not sound like a good idea, seeing as some people have reported new ones only lasting a couple of years. Could be a lot of work for nothing:doh:
 
i fixed mine in situ! it was leaking from he top corner its a common failt so check the 'new' one. i used some of that liquid metal type stuff, rated for aircon about 3 quid and comes in 2 tubes that you mix
 
Where does the a/c condenser sit in the engine bay? I have been told that mine leaks and this idea of using liquid metal to sort it sounds good. My man says £500 to sort it so anything less than that is GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

Then your man is a rip off merchant. £70.00 or thereabouts for a new condenser a couple of hours to fit and around £45 to £50 for a vac out and refill comes to a lot less than £500.00. If you fit it yourself (pretty simple) unless you get gored pipe unions, then a nightmare. It should not cost more than the price of the condensor and the refill so that would be around £120.00.
 
Well thanks for that, good info. But where is the damn thing? And can you get a manual that has pictures of everything that can guide me? Haynes any good?

Blood great big thing with 2 fans on it right behind the grill in front of the radiator, unless of course somebody has nicked it :eek::eek::eek:

you can download rave cd from The Green Oval - Downloads | Land Rover Data

cd2 is what you want.

now to get at the common area where holes occur you need to take the panel off the front of the car where the bonnet locks into, 4 x 10 or 13 mm bolts i think.

then you will see some small holes, clean the area and apply the gunk to fill it, leave it for a week to fully cure then you need it gassing. beware tho that its not a guaranteed fix, just a common area of failure!!!

The tracer dye I had put in mine to find the leak came out all over the place on the condensor, it was like a collander:eek::eek::eek:. At £70 for a new one I don't think it's worth faffing about.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
probably not, the only bit its worth messing with is the few holes on the top corner!!! i did mine and it holds its pressure very well, but there is something else wrong with it so i'm putting it on the back burner till i can find out what!
 
Just bought a condenser £99 from www.island-4x4.co.uk/cooling-heating-heater-parts-c-5_72_96.html good guys for advice and the cost included VAT and delivered in 2 days.

RAVE gives some good guidance on the replacement which includes removal of the front bumper but i have heard of the job being carried out with the bumper in place.

I was lazy and got my local garage to fit it as they were going to have to do the regas. they charged me 3 hours labour and £50 regas.

Think about renewing the receiver drier at the same time if this has not been done i wish i had taken the opportunity.

Absolutely no need to remove the bumper:D
