Back to your original post.

Do you really mean it has backfired, exploding back through the air intake, or do you mean misfire?

Ill point out something basic - did he have the engine running while trying to connect? If the main ECU has failed (i presume he means the EECU) then the car wouldn't start. Would recommend going to a decent indy as your "mechanic" doesn't sound up to much.

Finally got a mechanic that believes what he states, had a diagnostic done and the following faults where found

Stored DTC(S)
P0102 MAFS Circuit Low Input Y A
P0103 MAFS circuit high input Y A
P0340 Camshaft sensorcircuit fault or signal timing different from crankshaft sensorsignal Y A

Pending DTC(S) detected during current or last completed driving cycle

P3999 - fault definition not available or manufacturer x2

also after a while the computer states vehicle data corrupted or checksum error.

after this what would be my next step?

You are throwing up a lot of faults + data corrupted? - I would check earths + no corrosion + clean up terminal harness's to EECU. This is located behind the EAS pump.

Did he clear + retest? The first MAF faults look like stored faults, while the others are active

1) P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit low Input
P0103 Mass or Volume Air flow Circuit High Input

Pointing to your maf again - was the wiring checked before fitting a new one? have you been given a mass air flow reading?

2) P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Check sensor seated correctly, no corrosion + check circuit

3) P0389 Crankshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent

Sure it wasn't that ? OBD doesn't have a 3999 that i can see. After that it goes into EGR which is not on the 4.6. Check the crank sensor anyway - is your Rev counter working fine?

Sorry for this but is any diagrams of the locations of the above sensors or photos that would indicate the location of the engine components.
yes the maf wiring was checked before fitting new one but I am starting to consider the new maf maybe faulty. also could you direct me to the location for checking the camshaft sensor circuit.

Maf sensor problems throw up allsorts of codes, including O2 sensors. You must clear the fault codes after repalcing the maf sensor as it's not a plug & play part. On the Gems engined models, it could be one of many things including the engine ecu as well, as these seem to be failing now as well, but you can buy them for £20.
It does sound like it needs someone who knows what they're doing.

Good evening

Just a update with my problem new maf sensor fitted , all faults cleared and after start up the rangie barely idles and when you press the acc it pops and squirting flame out of the exhaust. no new faults showing and now light blue smoke out the exhaust until it warms up, but the idling remain well below the 1/2 mark stalling but starting up strat away. Am losing my mind, as new plugs, new coil pack, new maf new fuel pump and gear box filter fitted. any advice apart from scraping it???

I have not worked on the v8 for a long time but I i would check timing first, then compression. it will at least give a starting point, electronic systems are good but cannot cope with mechanical problems. Many people think that a computer will solve all their problems, no matter what.if you start with the basics, you can move forwards.

Ok had the mech look at again with a nanocom and now says the main ecu has failed as it does not connect or connection keeps failing. is this possible???

Never seen this error on my Nanocom, but if your getting connection errors then start from P38 basics, and sort out the corroded connectors (we've all had them), especially the Diagnostics connector. Also check all the BECM connectors just in case it's been dunked in water. Then when the Nanocom connects we can get sensible ECU readings & help with the problem. Save the logged errors to the SD Card so we can all see the data.

yes the new mech is a jaguar landrover technician working at the solihull plant in birmingham even he was buffed by the rangies codes. will get on with the above advise and get back asap.

Sadly fitting doors on a production line does not make someone a technician. Get some proper diag on it. Nanocom being best.
