Hello,

I've bought a 1991 3.9 V8 Range Rover for weekend fun, at the same time I've bought a 1987 3.5 V8 Auto for spares.
What made me buy the 3.5 was mainly it's gear and transfer boxes.
The problem is that i don't know what do i need to convert my 3.9 manual into Auto.
Is there anyone here who have done it and can help me?
Kind Regards,
Nuno

The 3.9 has the EFI engine management system.
It's not just a matter of swapping boxes, the flywheel has to be changed, kick down cables fitted and the engine ecu modified to take into account the idle speed requirements when the car is parked, especially on an upward slope whilst the transmission is in "Drive" to overcome the possibility of engine stall with the extra loads imposed. Added to this is the removal of the clutch pedal and changeover of the bellhousing to the auto box one which does not have the aperture for the clutch release arm.
Cant remember if the "Classic" autobox has an Oil Cooler...it's been a long time since I owned one, so that may have to be factored into the job.

From what data says it'll probably be cheaper to buy another car than to do the swap. what shape is your 3.9 in overall? let me know if you think of selling (assume that its LHD?)

That's a lot of work!!! I'll keep it manual instead!
Just going to change the transfer box.

Thank's,

Nuno

It's LHD, LPG converted and has 86.000 KM, it's in very good shape, but it's not for sale.
Thank's anyway!

Glad yer still lookin for a proper range rover rasheed :D

lol fett!

no worries duplex just thought i'd put it out there.. so that it rings in your ears each time something goes tits up. :p

Obviously you powerful thought patterns are recievable from great distances. I distinctly detected a WTF from somewhere over the channel.:):):)

Could've been me when I did the first start on mine with another set of new tappets and heard the familiar 'tap tap tap' lol. No channel needed to drown that out, wild animals ran for cover for miles.
