Have an aftermarket radio for my P38 ('95) Rangie. However, it keeps losing the radio presets.

Is there a permanent live wire round the back there anywhere and if so, what colour is it?

Failing that, it has twin electrics so presumably there's a permanent live for the caravan electrics out the back. Can I scotch lock into this without the brain (my word for the BECM) tracking the small draw and thinking something is up and not going to sleep?

Cheers,

J

i would have thought you have at least a permanent and switched live behind you head unit.

have you tried testing the pins on the plug for the right one >?

Get your meter out, think permanent live is usually yellow. But don't quote me on that. Clarky is the man to ask.

Not looked at anything yet. Thought I'd get a heads up first. You are correct, I think, permanent live is usually yellow. It certainly was on the stereo when I connected it up. It just plugged straight into the adapter that was there round the back. However, it isn't saving the stations which made me wonder if the original radio actually required a permanent live. The multimeter meter is, as ever, waiting in the shadows ready to spring out and assist when the going gets tough! :)

Hi mate
The fuses you are looking for is F1 10a and F8 30a (under drivers seat) I think the wire color is purple.
All the best

Hi,
Sometimes the Permanent (red) & Switched (yellow) lives are reversed for some reason, most new Headunits have the capability to change them around via in-line connectors, you could try that.
HTH.

Aha, brilliant. That's exactly the sort of intelligence I was after. I could have spent weeks working that out. Cheers chaps. I'll have a play in the coming week!

Pin 7 in an 8-pin ISO power plug is the 'switched' +12v, and usually has a RED wire in an ISO harness. It is WHITE/PINK in the P38 harness.

Pin 4 is the permanent +12v. YELLOW in an ISO harness, Purple in the P38's.

If your wiring has an adaptor on it, trace it back to the original vehicle loom - the adaptor may have reversed the RED / YELLOW wires (some do).

Also, pre-99, the amp remote switch-on wire is at pin 2 (gray / black) - whereas an ISO harness has it at pin 5 (blue) - only relevant if your system has external amps.

Thanks chaps. Purple was indeed permanent live and pinkish red / white was switched live. The wires on the aftermarkey were indeed switched. Works perfectly now!
