Hi All,

This is my first post here so my apologies if I get anything wrong or have posted in the wrong place.
I have searched the forum for similar issues but can find anything that quite matches.

I have a 300 Tdi with an R380 gearbox which was reconditioned and now has a few thousand miles on it.
When shifting gears it’s generally okay with the usual quirks that they come with. My issue comes when selecting first or reverse. Sometimes it will go in okay but regularly it’s as it if hits a “wall” or cog so to speak and won’t go into gear. The only way it can then be gotten into gear in this case is if I can roll the car slightly forward or backward and then it will select.
If it’s of any relevance the previous R380 had the same issue.

If anyone could shed any light on this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome.
We do have an 'intro forum' which is always a good idea to drop a quick message into, where you are, what car you have (post a pic) etc etc and add that you have opened a gearbox issue thread in the D90/110/130 forum.

The first thing to check is that your selector tunnel is set up correctly.
Without the engine running, does the gearstick slide into 3rd and 4th easily ?
Does it go across and up into reverse or does it move past the gate or need an extra push ?

Did you fit the new gearbox ?
Did you make sure the gear selector shaft is correctly fitted and the grub screw is tight ?
(see the link below to the diagram for reference)

Do you know who built the gearbox ?

Looking forward to seeing this issue solved.

Have you checked the clutch fluid level, may need topping up and bleeding, I had the same issue when I discovered a small wet patch on the floor under the clutch pedal, level was low due to a small slow leak, topping it up and bleeding sorted 1st and reverse selection and I changed the master cylinder for permanent fix.
