Hi everyone,
i have just introduced myself in the introduction thread. i apologose now for all the questions im now about to ask!I have joined here as im after some advice on what engine derivative P38 to pick. i have a dilemma as im not sure as to go for the diesel or a LPG'd petrol. any help in swaying would be great. also need to know what the difference is between a DSE and DHSE. also would like to know what kinda MPG would i be getting from a diesel + service cost comparison between petrol and diesel? would be most grateful if someone would take the time to advise me,
many thanks Jose.

Hi and welcome I am afraid I am a bit biased as I run a 4.6 running on sequential injection lpg and have it chipped to boot and recently came back from scotland between 110and 120 mph most of the way and it was pleasant and quiet. I do all my own servicing with the help of the great advice on here . I have only been in a deisel once and thought it noisey maybe someone else will give the good side of deisel cos i cant see it good luck

As the man says the Disco is the safest option. I bought a 4.6HSEltd edition for 5k and spent 2k on lpg conversion 2k on new engine and about another grand on suspension and exhaust but it was my choice and i new i would have to but now it is running like a dream and i have had no leccie probs but it is used everyday

The DSE was the top spec till 1999 when the DHSE come out which is the same spec as a HSE petrol, for every day use i think the diesel is a better bet but get one thats been chipped.I get 25mpg local and 36+mpg on a run from my 1999 chipped diesel ,the anti P38 gang will tell you not to buy one but know no Discovery has the ride comfort of a rangey and i have both.

It was on it when i bought it , it a little blue box on the N/S inner wing . I think its just like the one rimers supply (powerbox) i think.

I've got a 2001 DHSE. no chip as yet. it does 24-28mpg average. its certainly not quiet, the accelerator is like a volume pedal, the more you press, the louder gets. its not quick either.
however, it is the best car i have ever owned. the DHSE has every extra and toy fitted. mine has vogue spec - sat nav, tinted glass, colour coded lower body kit.
i've been told that chipping it will improve the performance AND fuel economy. What i don't get is how can you make a car that weighs about 2 tonnes and has the aerodynamics of a brick, use less fuel AND go faster - the physics just don't add up. i'd love to make mine go faster but the fuel economy is already as low as i can handle.
Personally i don't trust gas conversions - also they often site the gas tank in the spare tyre well, leaving you with a massive spare wheel sitting in the boot.
The autotrader one looks like a very good deal. i paid 12k for my 60k mile 2001 DHSE in april this year.

just my 2-pence worth!

thanks for your thoughts guys, i have made an appointment to see the DHSE this sunday.
i would have liked sat nav, has anyone on here retro fitted it?
the missus is going to be the main driver as we have 2 young children, and it will live mainly in town so i think the diesel will be a better choice.

hi guys,
i can now say im a landy owner! i have put a deposit down on a 2001 DHSE, i pick it up Friday, me and the missus cant wait! its the one i posted on the link in this thread but you cannot now see as he has removed it from autotrader. it has full service with 99K, all the usual extras plus reverse parking sensors. it blenheim silver and looks awsome! the engine it suprisingly smooth and powerfull, it has been chipped. one thing i am unsure of is the shocks have been replaced with bilstein, is this common?
i will post picks up when i get her home!

how much were you planning on spending?, if you were going to get a very late P38 you might want to look at an early L322 their not as expensive as they used to be and will only be falling further.
