P38 Oil Separator Pipe Insert. HELP PLEASE

I think that I may have found the cause of my very high oil consumption. The oil separator located in the RH rocker cover breather tube is missing. I have ordered a new one but it looks like the new one only has a nipple on one end, the other end being almost flat. My question is which end should I insert in the tube first?
It would seem logical to fit it nipple end first because the nipple will rest on the baffle in the rocker cover and the body of the oil separator will be within the tube. If I fit it flat side first the bottom disc of the separator is within the rocker cover and consequently does nothing. I've looked on the various forums and every post I can see on the subject fits it with the nipple up so it can be pulled out but like I said the bottom disc is then inside the rocker cover and will not provide any resistance to flow, perhaps it's debris build up on this bottom disc which makes them so difficult to remove? Please advise.

Not done it or had a problem myself. Go look in the RAVE workshop manual for the item and its fitment orientation.

Thanks Dan, I have a hard copy of the Range Rover Workhop Manual which I think might be RAVE?

swac - IIRC I put the flat end in first...ie so that you can pull it out again using the non-flat end and some long nose pliers

Well RAVE is the software system offering all the manuals etc., but yes it should be in there.

It looks like most people do as you suggest, but don't you think that it sits too low in the pipe like that and with the flat end sitting on the rocker cover baffle the bottom disc of the insert doesn't do anything?

It is Dan but the picture shows the part with the two nipples which was superceded by this new part which has only one nipple and a flat end.

Can you put up a photo of what you have? Nuff members here will know what the insides look like and spot something.

Thanks for your help people. I think I was having trouble fitting it because there was a little bit of oily crud on the inside of the oil separator tube. I gently removed this by inserting a drill bit just a little bit smaller than the hole, and turned the bit by hand until I reached the bottom of the tube, pulling the drill bit out every now and then to remove the crud from the flutes. The new insert went in a treat then.
