Morning all

OK so im guessing you have all heard this before but I have a 1999 P38 2.5DSE with a "Gearbox Fault" having searched and searched I still cant seem to get rid of the damn thing, below is what I have done so far.

  • Changed the ATF fluid and filter
Stripped the fuse box and rebuild - No problems there
Checked the large connector below the header tank for water ingress
    Changed the transmission ECU
    New battery fitted
Alternator has been refurbished and rewound
    Pulled lots of hair out
    Had a nervous breakdown

Also sometimes before going into fault mode it chucks out loads of black smoke and on occasion when selected D or R the revs will drop over about 3 -4 seconds and then the engine cuts out.

Local land rover specialist garage has plugged it in and said it wants a torque converter £700 and when they do them they normally put a recon box in another £700 oh and if I want they can start it straight away for me, that was good of them...... I have been warned against this particular garage!!!!!

Any ideas/suggestions please.

Thanks
Peter

I maybe speaking out of turn here, but i think Ashcrofts do a recon box for around £700.00 including a torque converter. So it would seem you were well warned. Fitting would be extra.

hello, don't know about diesel, but on petrol gearbox fault is associated (mostly) with either a weak battery or a bad air mass.sorry good luck
