The problem of cold start is still present even with the glow plugs working. I understnad the reason for the allowance. However, the mechanic who is doing the job has not used the shim to set the timing with the camshaft setting tool. Looking through RAVE prompted me to investigate the correct setting and have the mechanic check the settings. He says he has not used the shim on other P38 rebuilds and has never had the current problem..there is always the first time.

I cannot see it making any difference to starting to be honest. The pump timing could make a difference but you cannot change that by removing the head. Unless the pump has been physically moved by someone. Are you absolutly sure the glow plugs are working? Did you not say you had the wrong number four injector? Have changed the ECU temp sensor can't remember if you said you have done that. That could cause bad cold start.
