Hi all.
Just posting this to see if anyone has had this or similar issue with the new Defender (2012) model. (Utility XS)
Took delivery of this one in July 2012 and by October 2012 I started getting shuddering through the brake pedal and up the steering column when braking at over 60mph. This is probably what caused the steering dampner to "fall off" which happened about the same time!
Vehicle went back in to Landrover dealers who said there is abnormal disc wear on one side of front brakes and they will replace discs and pads.
Car back, job done, problem solved...but no.
This same issue happened again at another 3-4000 miles where it went back in again, same issue found but no cause of the problem found. Same solution, replace discs and pads and send back to me.
3-4000 miles later, you guessed it same problem, same scratching of heads from Landrover. They did get one of the Defender engineers down from Solihull to look at it, lots of measurements taking, more scratching of heads and problem not identified so then replacement of discs, pads and calipers this time.
So now, 3-4000 miles later and for the fourth time, same problem!
Obviously getting a little tired of this now after 18 months and 20,000 miles :(, have been back to customer services a number of time and their response is always "send back to the dealer"...clearly not very helpful.
The vehicle is for my business where I have two TD5s and one 130 pickup which have been pretty much trouble free. I believe this problem has been there since it left the factory due to the 3-4000 mile intervals and it first happening about 3 months after receiving it. Still in warranty yes but over half way through it now with same issues.
So if anyone else has experienced same/similar issues please get in touch. Or if anyone can recommend a successful course of action they have taken with this sort of problem please get in touch also.
Thanks, Matt.

I think you're due a replacement vehicle. They have clearly not been able to fix the fault.
If they refuse, then a replacement front axle would eliminate a lot of potential causes. If that doesn't fix it, there's not much left but the ABS unit. Does it pull to one side when braking?

Hi zeaphod. No doesn't pull to one side as you would expect, does brake OK but gives a violent shudder while doing so which is not all that comforting! They did mention replacing the front axle last time but didnt do so. Have written to them and told them they've had enough goes at it and still cannot fix it therefore its not fit for purpose and unsafe...and still its "back to the dealers".
You dont think its got anything to do with my 45 stone wife sitting in the passenger seat do you?? ;)
