Driving my 2004 Discovery 2 down a slight incline at 40-mph on Saturday and the Oil light flashed on but extinguished almost immediately. I checked level and topped up with 5W30 Castrol Edge. Now the oil light goes out on startup immediately whether hot or cold but if I pull up sharply it will flash as if there is an oil surge. Should I be worried? Any thoughts?

The oil pump pulley is sadly notorious for coming loose, accessed via the sump. bolt comes loose.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it.
Only other thing I can think of is that somehow the oil pick up pipe has "shortened" itself. Maybe the filter has fallen off the pipe, if there is one, ain't looked at the parts pics tbh.
But I think you'll find yourself taking the sump off to have a look.
Great opportunity to sort out the bolt, and if it is loose you are lucky it hasn't come right off!:)

As above. Did you have to put much oil in it to get it between the upper & lower marks on the dipstick (where I keep MY oil level) & when was the oil/filters last changed ? The oil could be to thin if it's been in there for ever & a day + the filter has a pressure relief valve in it that will open if it becomes blocked & may cause low pressure or it could be a dodgy oil p. switch/chaffing wire shorting to earth.

I had to put in 1 litre which took it up to max. The oil is probably older than it should be but I will do some further investigation. Thanks for your help.

+1 to this!
forgot the oil pressure switch, had that go on an Opel Manta once, sh!t myself till I realised what it was took it apart and replaced the ball bearing!
Jobs on cars were easier then!
The fact it got better when you bunged some oil in tells us that the fault is likely to be with moving the oil from the sump to the rest of the engine, as if it was a wire chafing or whatever that wouldn't have changed when you put the oil in. You brake hard, the oil surges to the front of the sump, the oil light comes on. This does indicate a pick up problem.
Bet if you overfilled it, this would make the light even less likely to come on!
But this is not a solution, just a fun remark.
Best of luck mate and would love to see the issue, with pics, once you find it/solve it!
