Was under the Landy earlier and noticed that there is a few small drops of oil dripping off the bottom off the handbrake drum. Can not see no signs of it running down from anywhere, and just seems to be coming straight out of the bottom of the drum.

Any ideas on what could cause this and where it could be coming from??

Oh, its and 300TDI 90 if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Adam

Don't think that there is actually anywhere else it could be coming from is there?

Redhand has pointed out that crank seals do fail and can coat rear drum brake- it should be obvious by smell.

Slow down people!!! This is all new to me so if it is this crank seal what oil am I losing?? Transfer box?? Is there a guide anywhere to show me how to do it, or is it a straightforward job??

Yes but wouldn't a leak from the crank seal result in oil on the outside of the drum.... not coming from he inside?

Nope they even have a oil catcher/diverter to make sure that when it leaks. The oil doesn't get onto the brake shoes.

See LR's mental;ity was we know it's gonna leak so lets make sure it drips where we want it to drip. Rather than put decent fooking seals in there in the first place.

Undo the 4 nuts holding the rear prop to the brake drum.

pull rear prop back to clear bolts
undo screw retaining brake drum on.

Remove brake drum you'll see the source of the leak then.

To fix it undo the nut holding the flange on, and remove drive flange. then remove seal and replace. Don't forget top use a new felt washer anorl.

how does oil from the crankshaft get all the wayback to the handbrake? shirleyits the rear tbox oil seal?

I have had drips from crank seal/sump work their way back to transfer box hand brake drum

pulling off rear prop, slackening rear drum adjuster and removing retaining screw and drum.

there is an oil catcher and 4 bolts to remove back plate.

if it smells of gear oil and is wet round oil catcher it is transfer box oil seal.

beer and tities mmmmmm saturday night:D

Out of curiosity how serious a problem is this? Is it likely to go altogether leaving me with no oil?? Aint been leaking long as it was not there a few days ago. Planned a day out tomorrow and now not sure whether to go or not??

Ok. Maybe I will top it up in the morning before I go just to be on the safe side. Only seems like a small drip at the moment from what I can see.

Cheers all

Transfer box oil seal can leak for a long time without serious consequenses....... I had a leaking one for months.

However.... I am neither a mechanic nor an expert... I am just saying what my experience was.

In the end I sent my 12 year old under the motor to sort it out.
