no diff lock issue on 04 disco , need help please

hi all, im hoping someone will be able to help me as in in desperate need of advise. I have a 04 series 2 facelift disco, i have a traction control but no diff lock, ive looked around on the net and its pointing towards no diff lock as the decal says its there but the knob doesn't have it enbosed on it. Im going to have a look on the transfer box and see if the sprigot is there and in just missing the linkage but at the moment its leaning on no. So my question is is there a way/can i get diff lock as could of done with it today? I love the motor and don't want to get rid so please tell me there's a way i can get over this. Thanks chris
 
yes ive done quite a few , you need to swap front out put housing and internals ,diff requires setting as shim is located inside front housing ,box needs to be off
 
You shouldn't need diff lock if TC working properly, my old TD5 had it with no linkage to use it - tbh I didn't need it, the TC enabled me to go wherever I needed, snow, ice or mud.
 
I was green laning today following a series 2 n reg disco which had no problem with grip but i had issues trying to get any grip to get out of the rut as left will in deep mud and right wheel out,traction control kept kicking in but spinning the right wheel up. Confused on what to do as other driver reckoned put it in diff lock but as i found out it wasn't an option :(

Disco 2 didn't come out til 99 I take it ya mean a 300TDi?

There's ya solution though. Buy an old Disco for playing in..
 
Thanks for all your advise ive only just brought it and love it except the issue i had today. Don't think it was my driving but maybe that's what it could of been as general net word seems to be traction control is as good as diff lock.

Thought they stopped putting the gubbins, in after 2001. or am I just having a brain fart?
 
Yes traction control should be just as effective as it applies the brake to a wheel with no grip which sends the drive to a wheel with grip. Having a centre difflock probably wouldn't have helped you but it might be a wise move as a back up if your wheel sensors fail. The lack of grip was more than likely down to tyres, wheel placement, vehicle grounding out etc.

TC requires a certain amount of power to keep it all working correctly or it'll pull your revs back and stop you, but if the conditions of the lane were like that you perhaps shouldn't have been driving it in the first place??
 
I thought to use TC in anger it's low box, hold the revs at 1500-2000 let the electronic sort it out. TC is great, it's awesome.... until you break an axle, then CDL helps a lot! I'd love to find a kit for say £40 rather than Britpart's £400!!

Straight from Wiki (cheap and dirty I know, but it'll do!)

"The actual locking mechanism was removed in early 2001, before being fully reinstated (with linkage) with the face-lifted 2004 model. Whilst the traction control system worked very effectively, it did not offer the same level of control and smooth operation as the vehicles fitted with the diff lock. Customer demand saw the diff lock controls fully reinstated as a cost option only (standard on top of range HSE/SE vehicles) on UK/Irish models, and aftermarket kits are offered by several vendors for those vehicles which were produced with the lock, but not the linkage."

Exactly, but if you do break something front or rear you can remove a prop and get home in mondo mode....
This only applies if the diff lock is fitted but not connected, access from underneath the car and place a 10mm open ended spanner on the spigot (located near side and on the top of the transfer box) to manually actuate the diff lock.

I'd thought about that when going laning, but it's too much hassle to keep going under the Landy every time we hit tarmac...unless as you say, I lose drive to an axle.

As a last resort it's nice to know although the TC always did it's stuff when needed.
I abandoned the idea of retrofitting the diff lock linkage due to cost and really having no need for it once I'd learnt a different driving style and discovered just how capable a D2 is off-road.
If anything the TC braking a spinning wheel and preventing it from suddenly finding grip (and the inevitable shock loads through the drivetrain) has probably saved a diff or half shaft on more than one occasion ;)
 
if you engage difflock on pre 03 models ,you need to ensure diff lock switch isnt connected as diff lock disables t/c and h/d
