Is it possible to fit one of these to a disco?

If so what do i need to purchase/rob/beg/borrow to do this?

I have a ball and pin hitch atm, I understand that I can't use this to tow something fitted with a nato hitch.

On series/90/110 vehicles the hitch is bolted to the rear cross member. What are they fastened to on a Disco?

Cheers,

Boggled.

If you do get it fitted, be VERY aware that SOME army trailers with ring-hitches are fitted with rings that can not rotate. This is plain madness of course but we were always having to watch out for it. I sold a generator trailer just last month that was like that.

To get over that problem, the so-called NATO hitch can be unlatched so that the HITCH rotates on the vehicle mount.

Rules!

1. If the trailer ring can rotate LOCK the hitch so it can NOT rotate.
2 If the trailer ring can NOT rotate, UNLOCK the hitch so it CAN rotate.

Take care!

Is their a reason why can't you tow a nato ring trailer on a ball & pin towing receiver?

To fit one to a disco you'll need a drop plate towbar and then you can bolt the nato receiver to that. not sure if you'll get the necessary height though.

Why? Not saying your wrong just asking for an explanation.

Yes the hitch isn't large enough to accept the nato ring.

Height would be an issue. though i'm now thinking i can cut part of the rear bumper away to fit it higher up the drop plate. I think?

YES!
A very serious reason indeed, that might easily rip the whole lot off the back of your car IF you got the trailer coupled at all.

1. The NATO RING is too big / fat for most hitches. A NATO ring won't even go into my combi ball/pin hitch.

2. t
The ability of the HITCH to let the trailer ride up and down, that is articulation of the RING in the HITCH, may well not be sufficient.

Best plan is not to tow a NATO ring trailer, and anyway, apart from any other factors the ring on the trailer is usually mounted way too high for most non-military vehicles to connect them up while keeping them more or less level.

The bottom line for a SMALL nato trailer is a hitch mounted ON the crossmember of any series or later Landy 90/110 etc.

I do not think you will get it high enough on a Disco.

Take care!

You'll have trouble opening the back door if you do. When you say it's not large enough I take you mean the throat on the ball and pin isn't deep enough If so wouldn't it be simpler to change the ring hitch for a standard towball hitch.

Because if both are locked, the movement of the trailer ring in the hitch may twist the hitch eough to tear it clean off the crossmember. ONE of them MUST rotate. It doesn't matter which, but many trailers CAN NOT rotate the ring, so the hitch MUST be unlocked.

OK?

HINT:

Before you get too involved with this trailer, sit it level and measure the height of the ring from the ground.

Now compare that with the height of just about every trailer hitch designed to be towed on the roads NOT by the army.
