I have a friend with a TD5 Discovery that has a few faults, mainly it will not turn over and there is a symbol flashing on the mileage counter.
We have tried a few things to fix this but so far nothing is different.

My question for this post is about purchasing a Nanocom,
If we buy this, View Product - NANOCOM Evolution
Will we need anything else as I noticed there are additional unlocks listed like these 2
View Product - NANOCOM Evolution
And
View Product - NANOCOM Evolution

Any help before I send off an order to them this afternoon would be appreciated

The Nanocom unlocked for the TD5 (your first link) will cover it.

HOWEVER! Have you asked around on LZ? There may be a Nanocom owner in your area who for a couple of beers, or small renumeration come and plug it in to the Disco.

What's the flashing symbol? Is it like a letter B? If so then the BCU is not talking to the ECU... bad!

No not asked around.
Yes a B like symbol,
My friend has bought the car like this, previous owner had the BCU away to be repaired as it had a fault before, it was refitted to the car and apparently all was well, he had it mot'd then after washing it the fault it has now appeared.
I have found 6 wires badly corroded in a grey plug behind the left side panel below the BCU, this has been fixed, all earths checked and the idm checked, did find a water leak at the wiring loom grommet on driver side but nothing corroded or green.
Fuel pump comes on with ignition and battery is good.
We have a spare wiring loom we have access to for spare bits if needed

So am I correct in saying that if either of these have a problem the Nanocom unit will tell me which is faulty and I can then reprogram a new unit or used one if we can find one that is not faulty

nanocom might help in the troubleshooting and you will be able to programm things with it but it can't tell you exactly what's wrong cos the BCU or IDM dont have fault diagnostic protocols

Ok
I have had a snap-on diagnostic machine on the car, the fault that it read was
"96 ROADSPEED MISSING FAULT"
Was hoping that I could get to the bottom of it with the Nanocom but maybe not.
I am lost now

that's an engine management fault code, is about the VSS comunication between the SLABS ECU and engine ECU, it's quite common and can be induced when the 3 amigos are on due to wheel speed sensor fault and without much symptoms... it has nothing to do with the BCU or IDM which is your main problem

Off course as long as they are faultless...first you can try to replace the fusebox/IDM cos it's plug and play and it can be the root of the flashing B, you only have to disconnect the battery first, plug it in then after the battery is back leave the ignition on pos II for 5 minutes as the IDM and BCU to establish data communication, programming you need only for BCU to make it suit with the vehicle's equipment

I'm thanks for the info.
I have just went away offshore for 2 weeks but I will pass on to my mate this info and tell him to go look over the loom to see if there are any obvious defects.

If we buy a new Nanocom can we just charge it and start using it or will it need registering to the owner/vehicle

You do need to send an email to blackbox upon receipt with the nanocom ID to register and to get your unlock codes but that is usually a very quick process.

Just managed to get back to this job today and I have tried a replacement IDM from a working TD5, battery off plugged in fuse box battery back on then key into position 2.
No difference the B symbol still appears after a few seconds, the red led on dash flashes as well, fuel pump runs ok.
The ECU has been checked out and has no faults but has shown a wire problem within the car somewhere.
We have found a nice man with a Haukeye who is going to be coming over this afternoon along with a few other modules, IDM etc.
is there any other things i could try in the mean time while we are waiting for the diagnostics.
ie how could I go about trying to trace this broken wire

Yes
We have made some headway.
The nice chap with the Hawkeye arrived (with his td5 converted to a 300tdi).
He also had a boot load of wiring looms, ECU, BCU and keys etc.
anyway we tried the Hawkeye and it won't communicate with the security system of the car. We tried fitting and ECU and BCU from the same old loom and had the key present, inserted the cars key in ignition and it instantly started. Success. The Hawkeye also comunicates with the car now. But we have found that there is a problem with drivers door lock mechanism, it locks but won't unlock with the plip only the key into the door but that inturn sets off the alarm.
We are now going to try and get the BCU fixed so we have the originals into the car with 2 keys.
Will update any further details as we go.
Thanks very much for the info so far.

the only thing you have to replace in your car is the BCU, make your engine ECM to learn the immobiliser security code and set the new BCU to fit to the equipments(gearbox type, heated seats, windscreen, fog lamps, etc) and sync fobs(unfortunately hawkeye can't sync old fobs, only nanocom can) ... if you replace the ECM you have to insert the injector codes...and set the BCU to "always disarm with key"
