A well maintained car will always preform better than a badly maintained one

keeping your engine in top con will help the way you drive, i look after mine but cant get that out of it, but i dont do a lot of long distance witch also helps. but maybe just maybe r/g is better driver and knows how to get the best out of her r/r. after all she had it 5 years. i for one belever her milage per gallon.

Has anyone had tried using bp ultimate with its claimed 28 miles more to a tank full ?

I only use BP Ultimate in my Rangie unless there is no BP garage nearby. I don't care what the Which? Surveys had to say - they didn't do a trial on a big engined car - and I am convinced that the engine purrs along smoother and with excellent performance compared to the lower octane fuel. I've never got 28mpg (I wish!) but I do get 22mpg. Its not just down to petrol though, its the engine condition, maintenance, tyres/ tyre pressures, loading of the vehicle and I suppose driving style. I use the Highest octane fuel available for both my V8s and the turbo-ed Merc SLK and they all run really sweetly. I did some calculations on the Rangie and the SLK comparing the high octane fuel to ordinary 95 octane, and they consistently gave better consumption figures by around 10-20 miles per tankful as I recall, but I really use the high octane fuel as the performance seems better on it, not for the extra miles per gallon. Just a personal preference!!!:behindsofa:

Thanks J T R :tea: I think the long runs help the fuel efficiency as the Rangie isn't a car which enjoys short stop-start trips and it performs at its best on the open road (if you can find one that hasn't become an impromptu car park these days!!!). It also helps if you know the car and have maintained it for a long time to as high a standard as you can. Driving style I guess has an impact as well, but fuel economy is a combination of factors.

he he i just think you is better driver than a lot. i get 17 and am happy if you ever get 28 i going to ask you to teach me to drive he he. mine will improve as i get it to top con but it will take time.

Driving style has a big effect, my wife can knock 3 to 5mpg off the consumption when she drives the Rangie:eek::eek:

I used to laugh when my wife used the car (or the family) they had no idea of how to be frugal in a 38 (lets face it theres no point) and would come back complaining of how bad the fuel usage was, but didn't it go well !

Isnt it a shame when a simple discusion ends up in a slanging match, still thats life I supose, as to the question of MPG my 3.5EFI Vouge does 12 around town 18 on a run my 4.6 Autobiography does 17 around town and the best on a run was when I got bought her in Scarborough and drove home to Cornwall which was 23.4. At the end of the day its down to driving style if you have got lead in your boots all the time yourl never have high numbers.

take your pick but I have a 4.6 running on lpg put a new engine in and have done 80k since no problem I drive all over europe and so long as you have the adapter to fill up no probs and the benefit of 200 miles on gas plus petrol of 250 so can go 400 to 500 miles between fillups so 55p per litre or 1.10 for petrol as before the diesels are tractors

.
So thats an average of .825p per litre average, I pay about the same here in France for diesel and get around 550 miles to a tankful and no risk of slipped liners:p:p:p
