That should be one of 2, M10 studs.

But is it just there to close the hole or attach something to it? As mine was never there to begin with. It was left open

It's how the transfer box is attached/bolted to the gearbox.
2 bolts (on the other side) and two studs on this side. Or you can use bolts, the studs make it a bit easier to get everything bolted up IMO.
I don't think they were left 'open' as it would be a hole into the LT230 which would leak oil.
