looking for new car next year need advise on.........

looking for new car next year need advise on a range rover aka as a p38.
i have about £3500-£4000 limit to spend on a next car next year now i have set myself a few very different targets in terms of vehicle im looking for i currently drive a 1997 r reg passat se tdi 110bhp and work for VW it has its perks.
one of the cars i have chosen to look into is the p38 simply because i love the look of them and as a technician i do alot of odd jobs and the p38 has lots of tool space also due to the passat being well equiped for its year i wanted something equally if not more equiped.this the p38 seems to do with out fail.
i joined the fourm in hope to see you views as owners also common faults with them.
what does p38 mean ?
i also purchuased the magazine car mechanics today to my surprize reviews the p38. it says to go for a petrol and get a lpg conversion due to the diesel being noisey and sluggish.but i noticed thye 2.5 lump is from a bmw surley this of the 3 engine types would be more reliable ?

from the P38 i had i can say air suspension can be problematic, blend motors and it used to love to fail to open on the remote sometimes then not let you start it, forcing you to reset the imobilizer by doing a code of turning the keys left and right in the right order which was pretty annoying, they do have niggles but overall are really decent nice cars, never driven a diesel one but driven a newer shape one with the TD6 engine and that was slow enough so would efinatly say go for a petrol.
