Hello all,

So Ive just purchased my first Defender a 2002 90. So far its going great but locking the doors is driving me insane.

It was previously a real farm vehicle which never got locked and only came with 2 keys one that dose the ignition and passenger door but doesn't seem to work on the rear door and drivers side - maybe because the locking mechanism is stiff? Both doors are a bit beaten up. And the other key doesn't seem to do anything at all!?

So currently I can only lock / unlock the drivers and rear door from inside the car then climb out the passengers and lock / unlock using the key outside.

Ideally I would like to fit remote central locking for all 3 doors and only have one key for ignition and door locks. To do this I figured I would need these:

DEFENDER TDI / TD5 IGNITION BARREL + 3 MATCHING LOCKS

Rightclick

Then get the key in the remote key fob cut to the new key which works with the barrels. One key and remote all in one!!! Im not so fussed about alarms etc, just locking / unlocking all doors from a simple press of a button.

Has anyone done something like this before? or see any problems I might run into?

I have already spent hours of my evenings scrolling though threads about lots of talk of central locking but not much actual pictures or guides of how its been done. Any hints, tips or links to things that could help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Rupert

This is what I have used for a 2001 TD5 110. I have not used the locks you identified did not know of them, just replaced the three barrels with new ones but I did by four matching barrels just in case one eventually stopped working and I would have a spare matching key barrel.
Please see attached a how to, kindly given to me by PaulMc along with the central locking kit I used, this works fine and no issues with quality, also PaulMc sent a wiring Diagram to use two relays instead of a "H bridge relay" which is ideally required.

My 1997 has a 2009 or there abouts body on it so I bought an alarm off eBay that included the door lock solenoids. Once I stripped the door card off the drivers door I found the solenoid already fitted. Then I found that the rear door solenoids were commoned in the box under the drivers seat. From there it was an easy matter to join the wires to the alarm and have a working central locking and alarm.

Okay and how did a 1997 warrant a 2009 body?

Was on it when i bought it. Galv chassis restoration, original bulkhead, nice seats, central locking etc......with the reliability of a 300TDi.

At the risk of a thread hijack....

Back to the point.

Does the Defender use the same solenoids as the Rangie? They have a bit of a rep for failing.

Pesonally I don't like remote locking. 1) I like to hear the clunks, so I know all doors have locked. 2) I have found on a couple of cars that when I put the remote fob in my pocket the other keys and junk often press the button and unlock the car.

Good points I was a bit concerned the aftermarket kit might be a bit weak. But I purely want it so I don't have to go around locking all doors - and my locks need replacing anyway so figured I could do it all at once.
