Hi Tim

Welcome to the loonyzone.

That is serious top end whack for a D2, even then you may find it is a rust bucket underneath. You are going to have a lot of searching to find one that is worth that kind of money. Take someone who knows what they are looking at if you go look at one.

I do not play with the D3, but there are a few owners on here who may want to chime in, @gstuart , @biggeeeee .

Oh, also you have posted in the wrong section ( a lot of people do it ) , @blue beasty can this be moved please. Intro or Discovery????

Cheers

hi tim

welcome to the asylum

There are some D3s around for that money, approx 8k will get u a nice one ,

there are bargains to be had if u don't mind doing the work

but please check ,

air suspension works , in access , normal and off road height without errors

new compressor 4-500

check everything works, try every button etc

check spare wheel is fitted

2005 is a lower tax rate

cam belts etc need doing every 7x years or 105,000 miles, if they havent been done allow £1,000

full service history

on tick over u want to just dab ur brakes , listen out for any knocks, if there are , will be wishbones

tyres around £120 each

make sure it doesn't wander down the motorway ,

the higher u go in models the more expensive the ins will be

get one with electric seats , a lot more comfortable

drivers seat will be 8x way , passenger 6x way

from my own personal point of view, adore the D3 , extremely nice to drive

tdv6 , 2.7 litre , expect 20 mpg around town 32-34 mpg on a run

as @neilly has mentioned the D2s do suffer from rust, but he's the expert when it comes to these

@biggeeeee has owned D2s and recently changed to a D3 , so should be along soon to tell u how they compare

if u go for a D3 u will need a diagnostics, iid bluetooth are the ones to have , £400

good luck in what ever u decide

gary

Definitely the wrong section.
That's top end for disco 2 and probably not enough for a disco 3. Bump the budget up another 3k and get a reasonable disco 3 but first post in the right section.

I had my Disco II for 11 years and was happy enough with it, however the rear of the chassis rusts like nobodys business and good ones are hard to find.
If you decide to go down the Disco II route you may want to look at Japanese Imports (google search will find them for you) only downside is they at 4l petrol engined.

I must say the Disco 3 is a completely different animal to the 2, I love driving the 3, its such a pleasure and will sit happily at 70mph (perhaps more:rolleyes:) on the motorway all day long.

this is what i found when i originally looked at the D2s, rear chassis rusting

did think at one point in buying one with a bad chassis cheap then getting a new chassis , but the quotes were silly , some in excess of 4k

the D3 was an accidental find, rang the garage to view and he wanted shot of it, seeing he said so many people walked away as it had the air bag lights on , price reflecting that as well

but the chassis is solid on this disco and will at the end of the day be a decent landy to have

just got to get round and fit the parts,

at least it's keeping me busy , lol

I own a D2 & a D3, & a range rover.

The D2 is more like a tractor. The D3 is a lot more refined drive, & I prefer the drive of the D3 to the L322 range rover.
There's no comparision that can be made between the D2 & D3 because they're completely different vehicle. The D3 is a range rover sport with a more pratical body. The D2 will rust before your eye's.

The D2 will be more kind to your pocket. The D3 is in the range rover bracket of expence.

Personally, I'd go for the D3.
