Hi i'm james i'm new to this forum and have start a rebuild of my landrover 90 TD i was given a few months ago. I have already totally rebuilt the front axle as the cv joint and halfshaft was knackered. I replaced all the seals and fitted new gaskets and it now looks new :). My next job is to strip the whole thing back to the chassis and clean everything up and see what else needs doing!

My current job is just taking off all the panels tub, doors, sills, cab etc and then hopefull i will sandblast the lot including the chassis. The landrover was an old farm vehicle and has 100 000 miles on the clock. I was just wandering how expensive it would be to rebuild it? or is it not worth it. I was just thinking keep the engine as is until it dies and then buy a disco and do either a 300tdi or 200tdi conversion? What do u think? any advice wouyld be most welcome :)
 
A 200 or 300 is a brilliant upgrade. I think you will find a 200 easier to fit as lots of people have done them = more info and lots of conversion parts can be bought instead of having to make them. However i run a 300 retrofit and can't fault it, as does a mate in his classic rangy. With the 300 you will probably have to improvise a bit more but i think you can now buy conversion kits, try ebay or steve parker. Either way the power will make a huge difference, they are both easy jobs to do and you can pick up either of the engines for several hundred £s or less and if you do get stuck, theres loads of people to help on here:D

You did a tidy job of that axle, what did you paint it with?

Yeah i've been looking into the 200tdi conversion and theres lots of info and kits you can buy like you said so if i do it i reckon i'll go that route. Wheres the best place to get a disco 200tdi ebay?
And cheers i first painted it with red oxide primer then used black hammerite. The hammerite is a pain to paint with as its so thick but it came out well in the end :)

looking good so far James - keep it up and it will serve you well for a long time. the 200 conversion is easy to do but you do have to buy or make a certain amount for it to fit in whereas the 300 is a lot easier proposition - only really the engine mountings on the chassis to relocate, no expensive exhaust downpipe to buy as std disco fits. Both need imagination with air filter siting, water and oil pipes on both need playing with, also the cost of parts for the 300 engine are cheaper than for the 200 - check the price on water pumps, powersteering pump etc, so for a long term "keeper" the 300 becomes a more cost realistic option. Plenty of cheep Disco's on ebay, do not buy an engine on the floor, much better to be able to drive it and make sure it is a goodun.
 
Havn't really look to much into a 300tdi conversion tbh as the 200tdi seems to be a lot more common thing to do. Is it as simple as the 200 tdi then and could i still use the same gear box? i will have to research a bit more into the 300tdi conversion.
 
I went the 200tdi route - mainly because you can use the existing chassis mounting points, whereas with the 300 you'll need to be handy with a welder or know someone who is, since the chassis mounting points will need to be moved.
Yes, with the 200 there are a number of "challenges" to be overcome (exhaust, intercooler, PAS pipes, wiring, etc.) but so many people have now done the conversion that there is a wealth of knowledge on forums like this.
I did a 200tdi swap on my own having never done anything like it before - that says more about the relative simplicity of the task rather than my level of competence!

Hi im new on here and not sure if im posting this on the right thread i am rebuilding a 90 too. I have been replacing the gaskets and bearings on the front drivers side swivel housing as had taken a nasty knock. I bought the swivel housing kit from paddockspares. When i took of the top swivel pin there were no shims fitted i got given four different sizes of shims for the torque settings. Ive tried every shim all together seperate ones and none of them set the torque right so i rang paddock and asked them if i would need more shims and they have said they have never known someone to need more than the four shims that are provided with the kit.

Any suggestions.
 
So today i had a couple hours free so set about taking the cab of the landrover. This was fairly easy and came off with no problems. I've attached a few pics as well. The old ifor williams canopy has come of as well which i'm going to sell as i don't plan on ever using it so it will just take up space. next thing to do is take of the floor panels, sills and the seat box. I've had a go at the sills and of course all the bolts are hard to get to and are rusted, so i will have another go at them when i get time. The floor panels are also a pain! i dunno if anyone knows whats the best way to get the screws out? just drill them out? the seat box should come out with no problem i hope!!!! Next will be the rear tub does anyone have any experience with wiring? just wandering how to go about disconnecting all the lights and making sure i know how they all go back on!!!

I've been thinking about the project on a whole and am still contemplating a few ideas. the first is just to leave as is with the TD engine. or buy a old disco and put the 200tdi in. If i were to go down the 200tdi route i think i would get a galv chassis as well. if i brought a 90 200tdi galv chassis would the 200di disco block fit? because i wouldn't want to start cutting the nice new galv up lol

Yes the Disco 200 uses the came mounts as the defender engine so no chopping your galv! And i would recommend buying a heap of bolts and just replace as you go! if you ever have to work on that bit of the vehicle again working with unseized bolts will save you heaps of time!

Handy shed you have too it'll be a god send to have a dry floor and landy come winter:cool:
 
I have only just finished my project. Change to a 200tdi. Strip and rebuild replacing parts that need replacing. I would wait for the 19J to give up as said before get a stack of stainless steel bolts. I also got some thin matting to go between steel and aluminium parts to stop corrosion. Brick foam makes a cheap solution the sealing between panels.

I waited to do this till the right engine cam along in the form of a written off defender. Well worth the wait as I was able to change the looms with the engine and bring the gearbox across with it. along with a much nicer dash saved heaps of money.

Hi munroe.frost did you restore the old engine first and then wait until you found a suitable 200tdi engine to fit then? I'm very interested in exactly what you did with your restoration as this was my original plan to leave the old TD engine as is and wait until i find a suitable disco/defender 200tdi donor to use for the conversion. Any info on your restoration would be greatly recievied!! :)

i've managed to do a bit more to the landrover over the past few days mainly undoing all the bolts on the tub so i can eventually take it off! the screws that hold the doors and floor panels are rusted in pretty well so i'll have to use an impact driver to get them out next time i do some work on it!
I also would like to know how to take of the reversing lights from the tub i've attached a picture of what i mean. Does anyone know how to take them off? i don't really want to damage the casing too much as i intend to reuse them again.

i did my reverse light the other day, removed the wires and it just screwed off mate, don't think there is anything more complicated to it
 
Today i finally got round to doing some more work to the landrover! :) i'm a student so have been working as much as i can over the hols to earn the ££ to pay for the build!! I managed to get the sills off eventually! Who ever thought it was a good idea to use about 8 bolts on each sill?? Lol next i set about taking the doors oof. They just keep getting in the way and i thought i would try to get them off while i was there. I managed to get one off and took the door card off the otherside so it is easier to access the bolts. I then sprayed everything with superslaks so hopefully next time i go down the floor pannels will be next and finish taking the wiring off the tub so that can be removed! Here are a couple of pics of the doors and sills.
