Hi,

The keys i recieved when i bought my 2005 TD6 are in poor condition, one of the fobs is knackered with water damage, however the key starts the engine.

The other key fob opens and closes the the doors etc with no problem, but the actual key will not start the engine........hence i need to take both keys out with me.......also the rubber bits on both keys is knackered.

Do i have to buy the new keys from a main dealer or is there somewhere else i can buy them?, cos i can see what will happen sometime in the future is that the good fob will stop working, i wont be able to get in the car, and it will be in the middle of winter in the middle of no where, (sods law).

Thanks in advance

Hi mate, i had pretty much the same issue, but i had two keys that started the engine, but only one that the fob section worked, and the buttons on both were knackered. After doing loads of research i found that the old way to get BRAND NEW keys was to get them from a stealer. But i did a work around, i got two second hand keys from ebay and transplanted the electronics from inside the second hand key fob into the broken one of my key, then i carefully cut the buttons from the second hand keys and fitted them to my keys, once i had done this it was a simple task of re syncing my keys with the car, and i was done, two almost brand new keys, with perfect buttons for under £40 :D compared to £190 each  i was quoted from Land Rover for one replacement key. May be worth a try to get your fob section working with the one that starts the engine, then you would only need to buy one replacement key from LR.

Hope that helps, if you need any more info let me know, by the way if you search ebay and the key looks the same as yours i.e. land rover logo, same shape etc.. but it says discovery 2 in the advert etc... dont worry they are the same key as the range rover, it should still work, all you need is the transmitter from inside the fob.

Matt,

Thanks for the reply and your advice, i am bidding for a key at the moment and will keep my eyes open to see if any others turn up.

Hi Bob, remember the key section on the second hand one won't work in your car to start the engine, you just need the transmitter section to repair yours.

Btw don't forget the only part you can use from Ebays keys is the carcass, the electrics unside will never able be to be programmed to YOUR car, so don't believe the sellers bulls@@t if they claim its a simple re-programme... It's not!, it will never work!

Sorry mate, your wrong there, with the L322 range rover you can resync the donor electronics with your own vehicle, I know this because this is what I have done my self with the keys I got off ebay, it's actually the carcass you cannot use as you cannot remove the old key secotion without breaking the plastic housing, you can only reuse the electronics section and the buttons.

Hi Kate

The buttons are pressed onto the plastic housing with tabs moulded onto the rubber buttons, i used a very small watch makers screw driver to release the small rubber tabs from the plastic house, just really carefully push the small flathead screw driver into the edge of the buttons and as you stretch the rubber you will see the small tabs, try any keep as many of the rubber tabs in one piece as possible as these are what you use to fix the buttons on to your own key. With your own keys follow the same procedure to remove your old buttons. Once you have the replacement buttons in place on your key, use a little superglue on the inside of the plastic case to hold the buttons in place.

Good Luck, take your time! and they will turn out like mine, mine started out with all the buttons pushed in, now they look like brand new! so i know this method works.
