Hi has anyone come across a problem that you turn ignition key to put on dash lights but don't come on but u can still start then once started leaves battery light on, but also starts as normal another time lights on starts no battery light, then I can start vehicle no lights on car starts no instruments on speedo tacho fuel or temp but also steering heavy..
Had battery checked all good and alternator good ....im coming to thinking its ignition switch ...any one ..?

Ignition switch failure is not unknown.

This is what I'm leading to as this morning would not start till lights where lit up after about 5 attempts with switch.. thank u for replying
Do any one know if I have to get it coded once changed out to a new unit...

You could try squirting something like Servisol Contact Cleaner/Lubricant down the keyhole as a temporary measure, it worked on my Transit ignition lock.

Just had this on a 2010 tdv8, very similar symptoms but with a no start!
The back of the ignition switch has contacts that can get burnt and also check the plug on the ignition module as corrosion can stop the low voltage circuits working. Lucky for you if it's mounted in the lower console. ;)

Thanks guys I will do his tomorrow as left her at work even used the good old rac call out this afternoon but to no avail came back as Immobiliser low fuel rail pressure and crank sensor as ignition would not work properly iv booked in at garage next week ordered fuel rail sensor got luckie as original part of ebay new cheap see where this goes as use spay tomorrow if no go then see what garage finds next week....

A fuel rail sensor for an ignition switch problem?

I can see where that fault codes come up from as the ignition switch is not live but turns to turn over to start but then as its not live and won't start its not telling ecu to bring on fuel pumps and also not reading crank sensor....thus putting codes on that they don't work.....which to me I'm still thinking ignition switch so off get servisol cleaner see if it clean contacts up....

Diagnostics can be misleading, I think your analysis is correct.

What a day sprayed cleaner into key ignition slightly then reput key thats where it all went wrong key as this then locked solid not recognise key thus would not turn key then as that locks gear shift cant put into neutral to push car to air line so had to remove leather gater around gear shift to get to the emergency release lever to get her to neutral an then took ages to get dry b4 i would be able to use the key again as normal so to start but still no difference no lights come on but would crank over wasted day. So still to me thinking ignition switch last resort going be Saturday going strip it out clean it up making sure completely dry using air gun an try it b4 ordering ignition unit and keys an immobiliser unit.

After having to work Saturday morning for longer than planned only got short time check her out finally got ignition to turn to recognise key seemed to had dried out enough but even thou still interment lights come on then don't still not starting...had fuel in line pump delivered yesterday as well as high pressure fuel rail sensor got luckie all original land rover parts new ..if I do require them if not another few spare parts to put away in cupboards Good old ebay.. im all lined up 10am monday to play around with her as the boss has told me iv got sort old leaking patch on hot tub out first lol I let u no mark

Well after getting key to turn to get ignition lights on checked fuel pump and changed in line pump ny side tank giving much better pressure retried ignition bringing lights on after alot of attempts trying to start her to no avail checked both sides fuel filter all good. So I'm happy now its got good fuel pressure. I didn't change high pressure fuel rail sensor as thinking no point. As im still placing bets on ignition switch to immobiliser failure....but my time is up I put her on triaxle trailer wed night take garage Thursday morning. Iv exhausted what i can do without fault reader so fingers crossed an hoping it won't cost me a arm or leg

Did you spray cleaner into the key hole?
The ignition switch assembly is behind the lock, so you need to remove the cowling to access it. Spraying anything in the key hole will simply ruin the physical lock.

Hi yep found that out but tried tonight and all is well with switch dont get stuck locked now ....I pulled consul apart but couldn't get it to come out from dash section even thou undone everything I could see to release it to access key unit it has 2 screws on top but I ran out time as only thing was to pull side up but didn't want break it.....its loaded up on trailer for delivery to landypart hopefully they diagnose it an go from there....
