First post from a newbie so really hoping for some guidance as this is my first delve into the L322 world (I suspect it won't be the last

I'll try and give as much detail as possible on the situation with my daughters car.

2006 Vogue with the 3.0 TD6 and 5 speed GM box and 133k on the clock

Whilst driving home she noticed that it seemed like the gearbox wasn't changing up properly doing 70 and at around 3,500 rpm, came up with a Trans something message on the dash (her words not mine) and thinking she could make it home continued to drive like this
Shocked
came to a roundabout and next thing it's doing 3,500rpm at 30mph and then finally lost all drive and she had to have it recovered home.

I went to take a look the weekend (she lives 120 miles away which doesn't help), car starts no problem, no warnings or errors on the dash, you can select Reverse, Neutral and Drive, no unusual noises or anything. When in Drive or Reverse the car just revs makes no effort to move whatsoever. You can put in Manual mode and select gears 1 to 3 only (not sure if this is normal) but as before just revs in any gear.

Finally just so I think I've covered everything, if you try and select low range the transfer box goes into Neutral and then the low range icon flashes, turn the car off and restart and it's in low range, changes back to high range no problem.

I changed the gearbox oil and filter around 7000 miles ago (been running sweet since then), checked the oil level and it seems OK, but the oil does seem quite dark.

Thoughts anyone? is the gearbox likely to be toast, torque converter gone kaput? anything else worth checking?

Life expectancy of the GM box is about 80K miles but it could be a problem with the transfer box, has that got any oil in it?

It does rather sound like the gearbox has failed. I've heard they are the weakest of them with the 5 speed. My only experience similar was with an Old Ford Scorpio that drove seemingly perfectly all the way to work one morning (around an hour and 35 miles), went to reverse into a parking space and it just revved, couldn't select anything after that just as you describe with yours.

I had the box rebuilt in it and it was as wonderful as a 2.0 Granada could have ever been after that. Slow but smooth, it was scrapped a year or two later for the usual electrical gremlins that plagued them, even if it had been working it probably still wouldn't have equalled the value of it's gearbox rebuild :)

I had one of those on a 52 plate from new. It had 3 gearboxes. One of them melted the toque converter in the far side of Belgium in the middle of winter. Sounds like gearbox rebuild for you, sorry to say.

I know this isn't going to help you, but auto-boxes are funny things.
We had a Mk 3 Mondeo 2.0L auto with a Jatco 'box generally considered to be good for 80k miles in that particular model .. it was still going strong when we sold the car at 170k
