Hellu!

Was out driving my L322 4.4 2002-model today. Saw steam coming from the engine area, and pulled over. its raining coolant under the car, and is wet in the back of the engine bay.

I called my mechanic. He is very busy, but promised to help me if I could locate where its leaking. He has recently switched the coolant gaskets in connection with the gearbox btw.

Where do I start to look? Its not leaking. Its pouring out of the car. Hose thats broken?

Hose or waterpump would be my guess!!

You have put the expansion cap on as I forgot after a top up and it took about 8 miles before it blow the lot out of it!

When my waterpump went there was no warning just all of a sudden huge plumes of steam and the temp gauge went bizerk!

Temp gauge stayed in place. But how do I check if its the waterpump?

Either visually or if you can, get the belt off the pulley and see if you can wobble the pulley/waterpump shaft.....if there is movement it could indicate the waterpump bearings or seal has gone.....

Check all hoses for security and any signs of cracking or splits...they have moulded plastic fittings and these get brittle over time....i am due to replace one of mine that has a hairline crack in it shortly.

My monies on one of the coolant pipes at the back of the engine. Most likey the really awkward one that across the back of the block. Whip off the acoustic cover to get better access and climb into the engine bay and peer down the back, you should soon see the problem.

You were right. Thanks a million! It was the little F***** in the back. Do anyone know the partsnumber?

Have got the part in order. Will arrive tomorrow.

The only problem now is that I filled up with water to find the leak. So I should probably drain the coolant and fill up with new. How do I do this most efficiently. Is there a drain plug of sorts?

Take out drain plug bottom radiator and keep filling expansion tank until fresh coolant comes out, plug back in and fill up following procedure for vehicle.

That's how I do on my P38, can't imagine an L322 is much different
