hi all,
i have a 2004 4.4 and recently the instrument cluster illumination lights have failed so i cant see the clocks at night and also the turn signal and main beam lights are out also
i have seen the ABS warning signal in recently which i think is due to me resetting the eas after replacing the front air struts.

i have had the clocks refurbed to repair the LCD dispay and this works fine as do the gauges, just cant see them at night.

i have checked glove box fuses and there doesnt seem to be any faults on the allcomms apart form EBV function fault received from the ABS ECU but i think this is due to my recent work on the EAS which i have cleared

i dont get any seatbelt warnings if i drive without it on and there isn't a handbrake light when that is on or any indicators to show what gear i am in?

any help would be much appreicated

The EBV fault can be ignored - the L322 doesn't have one....

The ABS system on the L322 is the exact same as fitted to many BMW's of which some do have the EBV function....as it is not present on the L322, this can be ignored, mine issues the same fault!

Have you done the instrument cluster self test ? I think it's test number 2 using the two push buttons in the instrument panel

i wasnt sure how to do that although i read a few things about it, how do i do that?

i dont think i get any lights like dsc(what is DSC, i pressed the button but didnt do anything), seat belt, main beam, handbrake and i'm sure there are loads of lights that i dont know i dont have

Dynamic Stability Control and yes you do have it!

The procedure to get the hidden menus up is to press and hold the right hand button on the cluster until Test 1 comes up then press the lefthand button and this will reveal a number. Add the last 5 digits together and note the number you obtain, now press the righthand button and scroll along to test 19 and press the lefthand one again it will say lock on now using right hand one scroll to find your number and press the lefthand one to set it, the lock will now be off.

Now using the righthand one scroll to test 2 an press the lefthand one and this will bring up the cluster test.

(I could be wrong on the lock procedure but i am away from home visiting and that is all i could remember, will post the exact details later, plus all the other tests you can do!)

thanks mate, that should give try and illuminate all the lights on the dash, so if that works ok, then something isnt telling them to light up i guess?

Bang on, will post the exact details when i get home. Sitting here at the inlaws at the moment and no access to my computer!

must be torture!!
thanks, i'll have a play later
i now have eas, aircon, tracking was miles out so got that done
gearbox oil and filter next, then engine oil and filter and filter mounts

i love driving it, just ironing out some of the old faults can be testing

You got there saint , I've done it loads of times for various things, the instrument panel test lights everything and tests all the dials

i tried this and it was almost right, all i had to do different was hold the right hand button with ignition off and then turn it on to bring up the test 1,and i had to keep pressing the left hand one after it said lock and then when it wanted the number i used the right one to get them number and then i think it was left again to unlock, something like that anyway, but good effort from memory

anyhoo, the result was, the pixels and clocks were all fine but the only light that came up was the one that looks like brakes which changed from orange to red, but nothing else. this is the only light i see when i first turn on the ignition as well.
where do you think from here?

instrument panel fecked ?

hmm, i had the pixels repaired a few weeks back and i guess they checked that but then if everything else works then its getting power as they test these on the bench i think, i may email them and ask the question if they can test it for me

thanks

Deff looks like faulty instrument panel. A used one needs re coding , but you can buy them already reset to zero which makes them plug and play for around £250

top man, and thanks very much all, well mine looks nothing like that and i dont think it ever has since i've had it, the only thing i get is the brake light. the dials all work though.
i used to have the clocks illuminated but now nothing. i guess the next step is to remove the cluster and try and bench test it or at least check the connections

could it have been when i was trying to test the fuel pump when it was immobilised, i pulled out all the relays in the boot fuse box so i could listen for the fuel relay clicking?
the only other thing i had done was the reprogram of the engine/immobiliser link.

would the mileage info be logged in an ecu somewhere rather than the actual clocks and is there an instrument panel ecu?

The Mileage is also logged in the BCU and the Lighting Control Module of all places I believe.

Doubt the removal of relays etc would cause this....

Could be a loose connection in the cluster or wiring thereto...

here are the other hidden menus

Ignition key must be “off”.

• Press and hold the Check Control button in the instrument cluster (RIGHT button), and turn the ignition key to the first position (KLR).
• You will first see "Check Control OK", some seconds later you will see "Test Nr.01"
• Push the left button on the instrument cluster to see the car's identification number. Add the 5 digits (not 6) together and write down that number, you will need it for unlocking all the functions. Example: A123457 will lead to 2+3+4+5+7 = 21
• Push the right button until you see "Test Nr.19"
• Push left button until you see the number that is equal to the one you calculated above
• Push right button again
