Hi everyone I have bought a new engine which is a 2001 manufacture - my car is a 98 4.6 gems are there any bits I need to know to make the replacement work ? Someone has mentioned that the fly wheel sensor is in a different place - any help much appreciated

There is a gems and a mems, as long as you replace gems for gems etc you will be alright, there are differences with gems and mems. I you replace a gems with a mems engine you will need some of the parts, cam sprocket etc from the old engine as the set up is different.
As long as you swap a gems for a gems, just take off any bits that are on the old engine, sensors etc ( Cam and Crank ) that are not on the new one and bang it in....

MM I think the one I have bought is a Thor engine but I have gems so not sure what to do I have bought a new gems drivewheel with a new flex plate I sort of assumed that this would give the timing signals etc am i of course a bit
Thanks for the last reply

Hi sandy.
The Thor engine require's Motronic to run it and your engine used Gems software to run. Have you bought an engine that will drop straight in and run, ie all the parts like alternator, air intake, steering pump etc or do you just have a block with cylinder heads ?

Gems ran 95-end of 98my,Motronic (Bosch) 99-02.It is perfectly OK to fit the later engine into an earlier car,BUT you must change the camshaft sprocket - it has a different spoke layout that the cam sensor reads. For what it costs it would be silly not to change the chain and both sprockets. Most of the bolt on bits are easy enough to change over,as has been said the flywheel/drive plate is different too.

Hi everyone and an update as promised - success engine is in and started first timeruns like silk. had to get some parts flown in from the States - Atlantic British were brilliant they sourced the flexplate and drive wheel both of which were completely destroyed - the drive plate for the Gems system is on indefinite back order with Landrover none in uk but some in the states.
Also the plate which holds the crank sensor -which someone here kindly pointed out that it needed to be changed- I got a new one from landrover and welded in place to suit the old engine thanks to Barry for that.Changed the cog on the camshaft as well also reused the old sump and rocker covers as I knew they fitted in the engine bay-didnt want to get everything ready and find I was snagged .
I also changed the rad the thermostat and the feeder tube from the expansion tank to the rad again on advice
So once again thanks to everyone for their help and if i can help anyone give me a shout
Sandy
