Hi Guys,

I'm out here in Ethiopia on holiday with the Missus and I have been looking to buy/import a LHD Landy into the country for a general run-a-round. I could leave it at the Father in Laws which is well handy. THERE IS 150% IMPORT TAX on any vehicle you import here so even a 4k purchase in the UK attracts 6k import tax. That was quite off putting. Looking around I can find Defenders etc here but again they are 15-20K.

Well I have stumbled upon this little nugget.

I have to go back and have a better look but on initial discussions with the owner but I can get it for about £100.00 scrap.

Question , Is it a Series 3.

As can bee seen from the signage erected around the old girl its been there for a while.
I plan to get it lifted so I can have a grub around on the chassis and the foot wells. Bottom of doors are probably shot but hey ho. Could be a nice little project to keep me from boredom when visiting the outlaws here.

Cheers

Tom

And the right grill. Bulkhead doesn't look too bad from the outside, might bode well for the chassis. Does it have an engine?

Weirdly, it looks like the windscreen wipers have been used recently. So that could be a good sign. Or completely irrelevant.

Seems a bit strange when the there are appeals for famine aid on the box tonight. Is it much of a holiday destination?

Looks series three to me. Have you asked about import duty on spare parts ? Nice project if you have workshop/welding facilities there. You would not get many spanners in hand luggage allowance.

Does this make sense? Buy a Landy that needs a total makeover, pay to ship it to Ethiopia and then have to import god knows how many parts. Reliable postal service. What does an Ethiopian white van man drive? How long is your holiday?

As I read it, it's already there, they have somewhere to keep it there and visit often enough to make it worthwhile.
As for parts yes that could get complicated/expensive and owning a landrover is normally so cheap and easy :)

Aah OK if it's already there that's half the battle. As Bobsticle said just get it running doubt they worry about MOT's.

well i did a search and apprantly i think they have some sort of mot annaully, im not 100% certain though but apprantly you need to have the vehicle registered and only need complusory third party insurance only.

If it starts and runs your half way there then. It looks to be sagging badly, springs and shocks gone in places. It's also sitting beside a notice board or summat. Odd way it's just lying there. Have you gone back for a recce?
