I noticed that the power steering on my disco 300 tdi is quite heavy at low speeds, i.e. when manoeuvring out of a parking space on the side of the road. The pas fluid is not low.

Is this normal for a disco?

It is a little heavier turning right than turning left (while stationary - it is fine atm when driving along at speed)

Is the pas unit a recon one?

I had one that was unbalanced and it turned out it was a badly built recon unit. Replaced with a new Adwest one and steering is now balanced, never a light steer though;)

I had exactly the same problem - I had dented the steering damper. When it moved in, steering was stiff. Might be worth taking dmper off and seeing if that is the problem, though you might get steering vibration. Make sure you keep a note of where all the nuts washers and bushes are when removing the damper.
Cheers!
