Bought a 96 300 tdi last week with 097166 miles on the clock, was looking under the bonnet today and saw a service sticker saying that it had a service on 6.10.10, and the next service will be due at 151000, had a look at an old mot of around that time (feb 2011) which stated that the mileage was 93927, so in my calculation it had to do around 57000 before the next service was due, does this sound about right for a full service or do you think someone has been playing with the speedo.

Thanks jailon just looked it up and according to the records it was clocked around 2010-2011 when the speedo reading then was 139000, and that was just before the last owner got it (I think as dvla hasn't sent me the new log book yet,) is there anything I can do about it or will I have to just put it down to experience, the last owner did give me his original purchase reciept when he bought it from a chap called Mr Jackson from Birmingham so I have his previous owners name and address and mob number (possible culprit) might be they fitted another speedo who knows, but I should have been informed as I bought a landy advertised with 97163 miles, Maybe some of you out there can tell me if I got a bargain or not anyway,300 tdi 1996 in black "139000" mls, 8 months tax, one or two dents, ricaro seats (which I dont want,) snorkel, sliders, and fat tyres on alloy L/R rims, £3055,off ebay couple of weeks ago from Cambridge, does that sound about right! Thanks in advance "Worried" Geoff.

sounds ok to me and dont worry yourself bout the 133k miles its got as thats just about run in for a 300tdi as long as its had regular services

my mate has a 300tdi disco on an R plate and thats coming up to half a milion miles genuine on the clock and still running smooth as a babys arse :baby::baby: if looked after they run for ever :D:D

the differance between the two mileages is irrelevant to the condition of the vehicle and the likelyhood of mechanical problems in the near future..... its only relevence is to a potential purchacer who is basing his valuation on a meaningless number rather than condition..

in short if you aint trying to sell it to a chav dont worry about it.....

Well you would not get my 96, 300TDI for that.

you are either very very optimistic or its had a complete rebuild with a new body and every conceivable extra on and off road added, a 96 plate 300tdi would go for around 2-2.5k here and they are bloody expensive over here

Not optimistic whatsoever, mine does not need a rebuild or a new anything, pretty much bog standard county apart from rover 45 seats and a momo steering wheel.
Very well maintained, wax oiled every year from new.
All defenders are over priced but thats supply and demand for you and yes you could pick up a heap for 2k and then spend another 2k on it putting it right.

This is a Defender I'm talking about you know!!! My old 1986 defender was backed into in aug 09 (3 years ago) by one of my customers on his farm, his insurance man (NFU) came to see it and told me if I was to replace it with another Defender like for like I would have to find £2500 to £2800,The repair bill came to £1500 and the NFU paid it, and that was for a then 23 year old defender with 120000 thousand on the clock and quite a bit of corrosion around the body work aswell, so for people to say a "96" defender 300 tdi is worth around 2-2.5k :doh::doh::doh: The NFU said my old 86 defender was worth that sort of money three years ago, and if a big insurance company like that tells you those sort of figures then you tend to believe them, after all if the old thing was'nt worth anything near that amount why did the NFU pay to have it repaired, rant over back to you lot, thanks for the positive replies by the way.

Like they said. Don't worry about the miles. I found out mine was 'clocked' by about 25k after I bought it. I challenged the seller and he claimed the old clock broke and he replaced it but forgot to mention it!!! On about 180k now. Regularly serviced, by me, and runs like a dream.

p.s. My 1995 CSW is on an agreed value policy at a sum of £6,500!
