So, introduction forum post done, and day 2 of Disco ownership complete!
She's now called Groot for reasons agreed between me and my daughter.

Onto the questions if I may!
1) I have a groaning noise from the steering collumn under mid to full lock, left hand turn only, very low speed only. I have done some google-fu and have assumed that this is hydraulic preasure which could only be 'fixed' with larger diameter pipes. This kind of makes sense to me. It's not a major problem as far as noise is concerned and if anyone can pipe up 'This is normal' I'll leave it alone.
2) I have what sounds like the lovechild of a dyson and a harrier jump jet in the engine bay when I start from cold. I am now assuming that this is SAI kicking in on for 'emmisions'. It lasts around two minutes on a cold start up. Again, could anyone confirm that for me please?
3) After stopping and turning the ignition off, I occassionally get a whirr from 'somewhere'. Kind of a brrrrt. My guess is air bag compressor doing "something" ? Can anyone clarify please?

I've got an early drive to the Brecons on saturday morning so I hope to find any last niggles there.
So far, so good. Very happy with the car/monster I have come to own :)

Cheers

1 shouldnt make a noise unless held in full lock, the google about larger diameter pipes is nonsense
2 presumably viscous fan ,does it rotate freely when engines switched off
3 could be rotor oil filter some are noisy whilst slowing down

Hi

Disco 2 V8 ( facelift )
@TAH
Airbag compressor == air suspension compressor. Apols if I'm missing the right terminology.
@meego
Power steering pump would make sense to me if it was both right and left. What am I missing?
@jamesmartin
1) So, if it's not in full lock only, what could it be? CV joint?
2) No idea as yet ( and too late in the evening to test ). I'll pop the bonnet tomorrow prior to first startup and check what's going on.
3) OK, that doesn't sound scary.

Thanks for the quick replies all. Obviously keen to nail any gamebreakers as early on as I can. It's a LR, I'm happy with generic day-to-day faults occurring, I just want to know what's causing them :)

Cheers

if its v8 its not a rotor filter, a vid with sound might help when possible
cv would click in lock , is it only in one direction

you could try with steering damper removed ,then jack both wheels free and turn each wheel lock to lock by the road wheel feeling for problems

Re no3 question. If it has air suspension (all D2 7 seaters had air) then it makes brrrrr noises and sometimes hisss's etc after switch off (especially if you take something heavy out the back after stopping) this is the suspension settling itself and is normal.
Re the rest- it will make noises and leak stuff. Start to worry when it doesn't!
Nb "airbag compressor" perfectly understood and correct term

Thanks all!
Yep, definately air suspension. Also tested the little button today to raise and lower it and no problems there.
The brrt hasn't happened again today and, with a bit of driving around the groaning noise is getting less so it may just need some miles driven to get everything happy again after being stood on a forecourt.
Great car! Difficult to spot the difference between the rev counter and the fuel gauge sometimes however, as they appear to move at the same speed when I put my foot down ;)

Aaah right - those 'airbags' lol - yeah suspension pump is half way down the passenger side underneath. Mine pops and hisses when you get out sometimes or take stuff in and out.

Final post on this thread baring any replies! :)

The jump-jet noise on cold start up still happens sometimes. I'll live with it.
The brrt noise still happens sometimes, I'll live with it.
The steering groan went away for a short while, specifically when Groot wasn't warm. By happenstance I came across this page
http://www.speedmonkey.co.uk/2012/10/living-with-land-rover-discovery-series.html
Which says, and I quote "The steering groans at low speed. That's it. It isn't notchy. It isn't unsafe. It just groans quite loudly - which can be embarrassing sometimes. But it's a Land Rover. And they do make strange noises"
So .... I'll live with it ! :)

I'm detecting this as a trend with Land Rovers. You find a problem that in any other car would have you hauling yourself down to the local garage and spending days worrying about what's wrong. It's quite liberating to just say to yourself "Meh, these things happen and are considered normal!"

I made the trip to Pen Y Fan and back on saturday in absolutely torrential downpours. Road flooding was pretty irrellevant and I felt I was in a much better place than 99% of the other road users out there!
I was warm, mostly dry ;) and comfortable. One of the easiest drives I've ever had even considering the weather.
MPG isn't even horrific when cruising.

10/10 - Want to drive it more!

Re your brrrrt noise, deffo Air suspension. Mine does it sometimes randomly.
Think it just likes a fart now and then (who doesn't) :cool:
Ignore it, you'll get used to it
