Hi all. The rear brakes on my Freelander1 have spontaneously locked whilst the car is in motion. Up to now it has only happened at low speed but I'm worried that it could happen at motorway speed and cause a catastrophe. Last night for example I drove over a cattle grid and the rear brakes locked. Stopped, pressed the brake pedal to re-centre the shoes and everything was OK the rest of the way home.

I've checked the pull-off springs are correctly fitted, fully coiled one at the top, one with 2 coiled sections at the bottom.

Has anybody else had this problem? I think it's a shoe grabbing on the drum and then self serving to lock the wheel. Any ideas?

Sorry I am not a freelander owner I just. Remember a diff locking issue and sure it was @Nodge68 but he seems to be taking a break from his tags.
Maybe 1 of the other freelanderers can point you to his thread or help.

I’d be stripping the rear brakes down and identifying the problem, rather than keep using it.
Could be a loose shoe perhaps, jamming up.
The locating pins are notorious for rusting out.

I'm here.
It was on my FL2 as Freddie said. I fitted a replacement which I rebuilt before fitting. That reminds me, I've still got the seized diff in storage.

I have come across FL1 rear brakes lock up, when the shoe retainer pins have rusted through though. This is likely the issue effecting the OP.

Thanks Marjon. Retainer pins sounds likely. I've had the drums off and the pins are present. I'll wip them out and check condition... replacing the spring kit on Friday anyway.

I think I might take the rear diff as well. I removed the prop shaft a while back because the fluid drive was getting tight so it's only front wheel drive for now anyway.
