I have a 2004 Freelander that I just bought and now it runs like carp but when I unplug the mass airflow sensor it runs normal with a slight hesitation when I first step on the gas butt with the mass airflow sensor plugged in it idles ruff and when I try to drive it it has no power there is no check engine light and no stored codes when I scanned the cpu has anyone else had or experience this issue before and can possibly steer me in the right direction? Thank you for your time.

Yeh, presume its a TD4, as BB says, the MAFs often go wrong and the way to test is to unplug them and if the engine runs better then that's your problem. Plenty should be found on a search.

Generally when they go bad they are replaced - but there has been "some" success recently by cleaning them. Once again have a search to see what people used to clean them. They aren't really cleaned as such, you need to deoxidise the outside of the wire - or something similar.

If it's done over 100K miles then the MAF live data will probably show a low signal. Replacement is the only sure cure for that. Cleaning might work, but won't undo age related wear.
Bad running without the MAF connected could be caused by fuel pressure issues or injector issues. The injectors are a wearing part and have a life of around 100K miles. Sometimes a decent injector cleaner can improve function, but sometimes not.

Here are some maf sensors below which work with our TD4 M47 engine we have used these for a few years now on the R40 club.

The BMW one you only use the insert as it is the same for our FL1 and R40

This MAF sensor will work correctly with your car can be found HERE

Although this is a BMW housing, the sensor insert is the identical one used on the Rover 75 and MGZT, and will work without the signal being amplified

As an aside, EGR valve issues can give identical symptoms of a failed MAF sensor, and unplugging the MAF apart from reverting the car to a base set of values also disables EGR operation masking other potential issues not MAF related.

So before going any further refit your original sensor, and unplug the electrical connector of the EGR control solenoid, then road test the car.

Best of luck

I am trying to find out what kind of a diode it is in the mat as it looks like one my friend thinks it may be a back to back one but I do not think so
