hi Guys.

I've been getting the thing serviced at 12k miles, but noticed after 9 or so K the performance dropps off and fuel usage goes up.

So I hopped along to local LR Chappie and got a new Air filter. Stuffed it in and .. guess what 40+ MPG 500 miles out of a tank. Ok it was on the M25 which constitutes a slow drive. It was giving me 38 best before.

Guess Air filter might be better replaced at 6K miles rather than waiting a full 12K as per the book.

So if you've got one of these the Filter is not expensive and takes about 2 mins to change.

FYI Mine is up to 130K miles, and I do have to keep on top of it. so it's not cheap, but then no rattles and a lovely ride.

Its always a good move to make sure the thing can breathe. I had a bad experience with a 306 DT. The air filter became restricted, not enough to make the performance noticeably bad but enough to put such a negitive pressure on the crank case that both crank shaft oil seals were damaged and then the headgasket broke through between the oil return gallary and 'outside', hence resulting in a major oil leak. I caught it before I ran out of oil but the damage was so widespread that it wasn't worth repairing. :(

Don't know if the L-series could end up like that but I'm not going to try finding out.

Worth noting that one. I quite like the L series seems a well put together engine unlike the 1800. Been really pleased with the fuel especially after my volve 940 which seemed to drink the stuff for no distance. I was doing 430 miles for £67 now getting 480 miles for £50 2 years later!

I'm impressed with your milage. I get about 400 miles before I have to fill up. I do have a tunit module on it so that may be the reason. Its a good running engine but its not easy to service as it is shoe horned in a bit on the FL1.

Thanks for the info by the way and Happy freelandering. :D
