I've got a '99 t reg disco, so being a late one it has no side lights or indicators in the rear top clusters, only in the bumper. Well I wanted to be able to remove the bumper for off roading so I got some earlier 300 light clusters to wire in so I had 4 indicators and 4 side lights so when I removed the bumper I would still have 2 of each. Basically I plugged the older type clusters in to try them and to my surprise everything worked as I wanted it to, without me having to do any re-wiring, even tho some of the pins are missing from the original plugs.

I also thought the indicators might flash at a different speed but they don't. The only thing is that the trailer light on the dash now flashes and it never used to, can anyone explain if it's ok to leave like this please and is what's happened normal?

Thank you

Towsey

Cheers James

I did reach under and unplug the bumper lights and indicators to make sure all was ok but I forgot to look at the dash lights. Does the relay sense extra resistance then? Do you know wot the 2 blanked off female bullet connections are in the osr corner by any chance, I can't remember the colours tho. And is it still ok to put trailer on?

Cheers

Now u have four indicators at the rear you could change the indicator relay and fit the 96/7MY disco item which is designed for the additional load of the two trailer lamps to stop dash trailer indicator lamp illuminating... untill a trailer is connected that is, but then u will have to change back to your existing 98MY relay when u remove your bumper.

Normally, should not have a trailer dash lamp flashing in unison unless a trailer is connected, info is in your owners handbook.

The two bullet connectors are a permanent 12v supply and IIRC trailer reverse light.

Thanks discool

The relay thing did cross my mind and I could get it out of the same vehicle as the lights, is the relay behind the left kick plate near the bonnet catch? And am I still ok to plug a trailer in at the mo?

Thanks again

Towsey

Okay as for using a trailer I can't say that I've seen it mentioned on using the flasher relay u have.
All that may happen is the indicators on the trailer don't flash or all bulbs would be dim or flash slower or worse case the relay over heats, depends if your using a 4 or 5 pin relay, u may require YWT10002L or its equivalent after market version if u can't go back and get the other one.
The relay is positioned on the fuse panel by the steering wheel, u should be able to hear it clicking.

Good man, thanks for that

The other disco is a dead one in my mates yard so fingers crossed the relay is still there. While I'm here do you happen to know wot the relays under the bonnet catch are. And also while I remember, do you have any experience of swapping a new type steering wheel with 3 position column back to an old type wheel and 5 position column, or just any column experience at all would be really good, I've tried searching but with no joy

Cheers

There's no relays by the bonnet catch fitted when the vehicle left the factory, so if you find any fitted there then they have been added so nonstandard.
There's just a few in the passenger footwell where the bonnet opening lever is, depending on vehicle spec.
And I know nothing about changing steering wheels or columns :(

Yeah I ment bonnet lever when I said catch sorry. Someone said one relay was for dim dip or something like that but mine doesn't have dim dip unfortunately. Thanks for the other advice anyway. Have you any ideas how I can get advice about my column, I started a thread on here but no replies

Cheers

My my dim dip doesn't work either as I disconnect the resistor that on the bulkhead on the left of the washer bottle, not really required as I have bright LED side light bulbs, so the dim dip head lamp bulb on at the same time make the lighting look a bit naff.
So steering column, all I've seen is adaptors to fit to existing steering columns to enable the change to a different wheel.
But saying that removing/replacing a steering column if you have to is no a great issue, I would think the early item is the same as the later other than the splines and coupling.. But then I've never done the change.. So no help there :(

Yeah mine doesn't even have the resistor but I might look on that other dead disco and see if it's there and look into wiring it up. Main reason I assumed columns were different is because mine only has 3 height positions and the early ones have 5. Iirc the splines were the same but like you say the rotary coupling is different. Is there anyone you know of on here that I could msg to ask?

Thanks

Towsey
