W90 you say you dont have the tools.Buy a good socket set, spanners and a ball joint seperator. The whole lot might cost the same as getting it done by a mechanic but you'll always have the tools, for the next job.

It's only hard if the cup isn't too worn. ye need to make sure whatever ye are usin' catches the cup and it comes out square / straight.
Ah've read somewheres that ye can change it all with the drop arm in place... never tried it tho';)

I've done two with the drop arm in place;). I thought the time spent takin the drop arm off would be better used doin summat else.

ok. have taken all your advice and gonna do it my self. have ordered the drop arm complete with ball joint from paddocks, 30 quid plus delivery well reasonable i thought, this way i do'nt have to sod about getting he old ball joint out ( i can replace it in my old one later and i have got a spare). So best way to get arm off is ?. soaked it in wd40 while i wait for part. will i need some type of puller or should it come off ok, i,ve been given different views on this.

You will need a really strong puller - mine was so stuck i couldn't get it of the shaft and had to slip the local garage a fiver to do it, and he said it was up over 8 tonnes of pulling before it came loose!

I think if you leave it pulling overnight it might come loose. Otherwise you might have to apply some heat. Some come off with no effort at all though!

heat it (just the arm) and gently use a pry bar to ease it off - seldom fails

soaking it in WD40 is a waste

All fitted now and feels loads better . had to cut the bugger off though what a f**cking epic that was, who ever designed that set up obviously never had to work on 10 year old lr. refitting the new arm was a doddle

next job for weekend is tighten front wheel bearing , any tips

Tighten inner nut nice and tight. Then slacken off until wheel spins freely with no play in it. Then bend locktab over it and tighten outer nut as tight as you can without stripping the fooker then bend locktab up over outer nut, Check wheel spins freely and the jobs a good un.

I put loads of normal grease on because the shaft from the box that the drop arm connects to was damaged ,about a fifth of the splines were ground away by some one who has replaced the arm previous, have looked all over, all i can find are new boxes, can i just get a replacement shaft and fit that or do i need to replace the box. Will the steering be ok on the damaged shaft.
