Discovery ownership life woes: keep or sell?

Hi!

I am currently driving a Discovery 4 2014 SD 155342 miles. Had it for almost two years. Its reasonably well maintained. I love this car but there are some hefty repairs coming up. I got this car full well knowing it was expensive to maintain. But Im having second thought now.

To be frank I cant afford having multiple dreams in my life, and having a dream car is not a top priority.

The repairs coming up are:

Suspension: all wear and tear part needs to be replaced.
Breaks: probably everything needs to be replaced.
Air suspension: works but I have had occasional warnings. Car is more than 10 years old so it should break down anytime now,
Gearbox: oil needs to be replaced.
Timing belt: needs to be replaced.
Steering: steering sometimes makes weird squeaking noise like plastic rubbing against each other. No idea what it is. This could potentially be very expensive repair down the road.
On top of this I need to do a "big" general service.

All in all this is at the very least 5 000 EUR just in repairs. Thats A LOT of money.

So once again I am looking at more reasonable cars like a Skoda or a Toyota. I could sell the car now and get a decent price for it and use that money to invest in a newer potentially less expensive "boring" car.

What would you do?

Im aware Im probably asking in the wrong place. But no one knows the true pleasure of driving a Discovery 4 better than you guys

To be Frank.
You should have waited for that dream.
But most of your list is normal wear & tear as you know on these type of cars. Why did you wait for them all to come up at 1 time?

Suck it up and get it sorted, then don't let the list get so long in the future and the car will be fine.

Learn to DIY may help to keep your dream alive. There is at least 3 on the list that are DIYable

Presumably you knew all this when you bought it?
Sell it a buy a car you can afford.
Keep it and cough up the money to service it.
Keep it and ignore what needs serving.
On the bright side atleast your crankshaft hadn't snapped yet.

I think we need disagree on "reasonable well maintained" based on the below what have you maintained ?

Why ? new shocks all around ? bushes as well ?

Why would you say this ? to say everything is disks/calipers/pads ?

I don't think you are going to have to do a big service after all of the above.

It is but 5k for getting it backup to tip top is nothing really is it.

Change it to a Td5

All of the above is doable by yourself! (TD5).

But! As @ER1C has pointed out! If your still mobile? Most can be done by you?

Or? Sell it for a run of the mill vehicle

Pretty much every job you list there is diy stuff

Main suspension part that dies is front lower arms, done mine twice now.

Brakes are simple, they are just like any other car on the road, with the exception of the handbrake set up.

Air susp warning is most likely a small leak, air bags would be the first thing to check with soapy water.

Steering noise could be the column angle sensor, @gstuart will have some info on that, could also be the reason for the susp errors.

Cambelt is just a cambelt, and as the engine faces the correct way it is not a bad/hard job at all.

Ref steering that may be ur lower steering column

Indeed as mentioned need to keep on top of things as the list will get longer and longer

With them being heavy motors they indeed eat suspension bushes and brakes a lot quicker

If u can diy and have a decent set of tools can do most of the jobs yourself and save a lot of money

Of course if u sell it now ur lose alot of money , if a garage done all of that ur looking well over 5+ k

Get the jobs done and keep it, most of the work is easy TBH.

We'll all help you along. One job at a time.

As above mate piece at a time much cheaper If you can DIY or have a mate to help, steady maintenance is the key
