Man alive it all seems to happen at once:eek:
My fathers M-reg 300 tdi 2.5 manual Discovery has a check engine light and an ABS warning light up on his dash.
Presently trawling through Landyzone for answers, but if anyone has the right direction under their hat i'd be very grateful to hear their tips.
Any advice appreciated.:)
 
didn't think the manual 300tdi had a check engine light?
has it been converted from an auto at some time?

plug in diagnostics may reveal some stuff, google the blink code test for the abs light, although diagnostics should tell you this as well.

I've just had a closer look at the gear stick and it appears it has been converted to a manual. The gear diagram is an automatic layout and the centre console has a larger gap than normal for a manual, where the autobox gear lever would have been i assume. Could the check engine light be on because it is now a manual gearbox?

livers, some nice guy he bought it off removed the bulb from the ABS warning light and check engine light. I wasn't there when he bought it.
When he took it home i had a good look and noticed on start up the ABS light wasn't illuminating. I took the dash off and found no bulbs in the two locations, check engine light and ABS light. I replaced the bulbs and both warnings were up. I assume the nice, honest, genuine (please note this is sarcasm) friendly seller removed the bulbs as he has owned it for four years before my father. So i'd say it has always been up. Messaged the seller but no response, even though his iphone is showing he has indeed read the message. Any thoughts on if this is the gearbox change that is causing the check engine light?

is the engine still a fly by wire with edc pump (electronic diesel control)
or has the egine been converted to standard accelerator cable operating the pump?

appreciate this may be difficult to self diagnose if ya dont know what yer looking for! :lol:

no.1- edc will have a box with a thick wire going to it.
no.2- plug and socket for thick wire.
no.3- kickdown cable for auto box. there may be redundant parts of this if yours has been converted from auto.

edit.
all located on the offside of engine, about the height of the top of the road wheel, viewed from above..

Any sensors that could be duff with the check engine light?
Had this once on another car due to a duff lambda sensor, hole in middle of exhaust didn't help either :p

EDC pump is flat topped with no throttle cable. If its been converted to a manual pump at some point then that is likely why the check engine light is on. EDC pump gives more power but IMHO is an utter pain in the backside.
 
Thank you all very much. The latter two photos look like the one installed in my fathers discovery. I'm hoping it is why the check engine light is on.
Is there a way of getting it off? A sensible/ legal enough way?

if its been converted to manual, both gearbox and engine, and the original ecu for the autobox and edc pump is still there then I suspect that is why your light is on. remove the lamp as someone else has done, or possibly remove the ecu altogether, tho I don't know where this is as my auto knowledge is limited:D

Now, a further saga with the truck is the odometer cable from the speed transducer has been cut, yes, cut...about two feet for'd of the handbrake drum. I have replaced the speed transducer...but does anyone know where the wires from the speed transducer enter the engine bay then on to the speedo/ odometer? What colours, what connection...any photos or diagrams would be great. The old chap that sold it to my father insists it just happened before he sold it. We are scunnered, but hopefully get it fixed. Would love to hear from anyone about this.

wonder what the mot will notice with that new rule about removing bulbs and everything should work.
