almost anything would cause a reduction in oil pressure when it gets hot - oil gets thinner when hot. What we dont know is whether the oil pressure was just above the pressure switch setting before the last week. Without a pressure gauge, impossible to know. D71 (morning mate) mite get away with a thicker oil. What are you using at the mo? did yu change it prior to the run up here?
before yu strip the sump off, i would try and get an oil pressure gauge fitted to see what the pressure actually is. I have one if yu wanna borrow it, but i bet the guys down your way will anorl.

thanks for stating the obvious daft, but if it is causing that much of a drop in pressure then it would seem to be a major item, not just anything.yes it is a good idea to get the genuine oil pressur as well.

new oil and filter

doing the valve next weekend when its not torrential rain !

update when cold it blows out loads and I mean loads of blue smoke for about 10 seconds......then all clear...after injin warms up the oil pressure drops the longer the engine is running ?

How hot has the engine been allowed to get?

I rekons that you have 2 faults. The first being the low oil pressure that from the sounds of it will be the valve.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think the second is a bit more serious. I think you are at the beginning stages of number 4 piston melting or wearing the bore. I rekon it would be worth your while doing a compression test on each of the cylinders to give an answer one way or the other. If it turns out to be what I'm hoping it isn't, if you've caught it early enough you can easily sort it by honing the cylinder out and fitting an oversize piston/rings.

I've never actually seen a 300tdi in the early stages of this before. I've only seen them once the loud metal on metal clacking has started or the cylinder has completely melted and the engine is seized. By then it's too late.:(

I would definately check that the pressure relief valve is working and not sticking.

Do not be tempted to use thicker oil to raise the pressure. Lubrication is about flow not nessacarily pressure. A thick oil may cure the pressure problem but you will end up with some bearings etc starved of oil especially when cold.....like in the winter. :)

However, blue smoke at start up is a not good sign, but I would do the simple things first.

Has yu checked the turbo since takin it swimmin???

When Short Fat Bloke did a similar trick on the plains, the water inrush killed his turbo bearings.

Similar symptoms to yours, rattly, loss of oil pressure, smoke on start up, no performance. A week later it gave up completely, wheels destroyed, no bearings left :doh:

Lucky for him he had a spare.

Pull the intake hose orf and check for end float and journal bearing float

eres the other fooker I took apart today...

Tis a fair lump to lift out on yer own, manifolds and all. Anyways yer dizzy cap would probably have failed in the near future so you saved yerself another breakdown by fitting a noo one :p:rolleyes:

the dizzy in the series isnt the original as that came in a box.....new one has a different cap...any ideas what it is and where i can get one ???
