Can someone please explain how chipping a diesel engine and therefore increasing horsepower by about 30 can be achieved together with better fuel economy. it seems to me that the calorific value of the fuel will be turned into 'work done' (horsepower) so therefore more horsepower means more fuel = lower mpg.
i would like to fit a chip to increase driveability but do not want to sacrifice mpg?
thanks

You have hit it on the head, more power comes from more fuel, chipping your car will enable it to produce more power and burn more when it does. Where the economy comes in is, if you have an auto for example, you won't have the car downshifting on hills to maintain higher crusing speeds with the resultant brief full revs as it changes down and then back once back up to speed. This will mean slightly less fuel used overall. In practice, if you use the extra power all the time your fuel economy will take a dive but if you use it with restraint you may see slightly better economy.

which one did you go for and how much did it cost, what MPG are you getting?
I got a van aken box- £300 5 mins to fit, dunno exact figures but the transformation is remarkable for this car. As for the mpg maybe 4-5mpg better but I have been having a bit of a lead foot trying the performance! I will post longer term results later on.
I did a bit of research in these boxes-I also run a BMW330d sport which I also used a van aken box ( now that is really unbelievable performance and economy!) So reliability (5+ yrs) I can vouch for. Most other boxes state impressive performance figures and adjust the prices accordingly. The VA box can be adjusted. They supply to TOYOTA uk so you can imagine the quality of the electronics and the volume they produce for.
Best bang for buck IMHO.
I am not affiliated with VA in anyway- just real feedback from a real user!

I have a 1999 DSE with a power box chip fitted , which was fitted when i bought it and i get 26mpg local and 36mpg on a run. I have driven one with no chip fitted and it felt like some one had removed two of the pistons .

thanks for the info guys. van aaken sounds just the job. i am also considering the rimmer bros powerbox. anyone running anything other than these boxes?

Thanks for the info, I have been thinking about it for mine as even cruising carefully I have only ever seen 30mpg never more and pushing it I am down to about 24mpg. I do have a lead foot but probably wouldn't need to if it went a bit better, it does seem slugish. The car could definately use a few more horses. I will have to write a note to Santa and see if he is feeling flush this year!

This is why I love my chip. This was on a trip to Manchester back in June/July from Northampton. Set the cruise to around 72/73 and just cruised up the M6 with no problems. I took this photo when I was stopped at a service station to get food just after I got off the motorway.

My box will make the vehicle smoke a little under heavy acceleration so I just dont accelerate heavily :D

Hi Rodent

can only re-enforce the points already made
i went the full nine-yards with both the Chip & full-sized enlarged intercooler At Jerry fearns

having driven the vehicle over to the UK for fitting then returning with the upgrade work done It was like driving another vehicle

on the flat with the cruise set at 120KPH i was yealding 38-39mpg it made one hell of a difference.

I travel about 650 -700 miles a week and the route has some quite really steep non UK type autobahn gradiants never a drop in the transmission traveling the route at 110, 120 & even 130Kph
add to that I run it on Pump Bio and still manage very good milage

i agree stamp on the throttle and the step-down will produce some black trails but accelarate gradually & the power from 80kph through is certainly there and noticable.

on my return back from the Uk I ran the vehicle into the local Lr main dealers and they were really impressed what british ingenuity can come up with regard to the (BMW) P38
