Hi all, I have a problem with my defender, it starts and runs no problem, however if i floor it to overtake or when im towing it starts to jerk as if there is a lack of fuel, i have fitted an egr blanking kit but the problem is still there, can anyone help, cheers.

Hi Nathan, I havent checked the air filter i thought it might be something more serious, will have a look at it later today, cheers.

Its only a thought but me mate had probs with his r/r 2.5 turned out the air filter had collapsed inside the box and was restricting the air flow at higher revs... worth a look

okay will check asap, im not much cop at fault diagnosis but if im told what the problem is i can turn my hands to the spanners.

ive took out the air filter and it is quite dirty, however it is not excessive and is straight, i will replace later today.

I'd suspect the throttle position sensor has some dead spots. Beg, steal, or borrow a spare one t confirm it before spending any money on a new one. Dont forget there are two types (two channel and three channel) so get the correct one unless you have access to a Nanocom in which case you can just change the ECU to accept whichever one you borrow.

Yep sounds like it to mr after all the stuff I have read. Read the post "help with diagnosis please" i'm currently trying to work out what's going on with mine. It's a similar problem!!

throttle position sensor, where do i find that? turbo over boosting how do i correct that? this is turning bad.

Throttle position sensor is on the throttle pedal.
Turbo overboosting puts the ECU into limp mode until you cycle the ignition. Logs an error code if this is the case. Have you played with the turbo wastegate rod to try and get more out of it?

Hi shifty, I havent touched anything under the bonnet, i have got a rave workshop manual that reckons if there is a problem with the petentiometer it will go into idle mode, someone may have fiddled with the turbo prior to me, im told that to alter the turbo boost i will need a proper gauge, or is there a factory setting that i can do manually, normal driving around is okay until i need to give it some beans, then it just seem to run out of puff.

To accurately adjust the turbo wastegate and max boost pressure you will need a boost gauge but its not rocket science.
If you lengthen the wastegate actuator rod the max boost pressure is reduced. Shorten it and max pressure is more as the wastegate opens later. Small increments is the way to go here though as its quite sensitive to small adjustments.
The TD5 does not like much more than 1 bar before it goes into limp mode. There are ways to fool the ECU into allowing much more boost but they all cost money. I'd try lengthening the wastegate actuator rod by a single turn and see what happens. You can always adjust it back again if you are not happy. Just keep an accurate record of what you do so you can undo it later if needs be.

as above...a boost gauge is most helpful...Ive had mine mapped and run 1.3 bar...I wouldnt want to go anymore without an uprated turbo/intercooler...takes lots of fiddling to get right.
i originally went to 1.5 bar & it went into limp before I got out of first gear!
