I'm just going through the pdf file's for defender engine work and I'm seeing this tool constantly mentioned:

It's the LRT-12-080 which look's like a spanner with four slots for the crankshaft bolt to be retained when slackening.

Is this absoutely a must have for timing belt-changes / alternater jobs etc or is there a rough-and-ready way of making do without it?

It makes a small buzz about LRT-12-044 for checking that the flywheel is aligned also.

Another one is this LRT-12-077 which apparently you need for fitting the oil seal to the inside front cover of the timing belt cover.

Any idea's on if these are the bee's knee's or just something to make the spanner dudes at Landrover Garage's feel like they are in the cool gang?

The pulley locker you can improvise with a breaker bar to under the chassis and turn the engine over on the starter (after disconnecting the fuel solonoid!)

The timing wheel tool you can improvise by getting a sump plug, centre drilling and pushing a rod through

The fuel pump tool can be replicated with an 8mm(?) drill bit

That said, the two lock pin tools are available cheaply on fleabay. Difflock sell the pulley locker, but still £50+ from memory

9.5 drill bit and i would go with above the tool will be costly and would go a good way to using battery gun or air gun ,i use battery and as its hammer gun you dont need to stop crank turning

Thanks Station, the DIY crank puller look's pretty ninja, haven't got anything like that at home. How does it stay put do you have retaining nuts on the other side keeping it tight?

Not tried myself as bought the Difflock kit which bolts on

Think the 'DIY' approach relies on the socket staying put - 27mm for the 300 TDi, 30mm for the 200 TDi

Guess if you have deep socket and get the wrecking bar tight against the chassis, it'll stay there of it's own accord.

The bolts can be very very tight and also fixed with loctite - just so you're forewarned!

Sorry - answered wrong question!

The DIY Crank puller has a socket (whatever size fits) between it and the crank wheel to create a force for the two bolts you screw in to push against - the pulley itself has holes (might need cleaning out with a tap if full of crap) to bolt into

This is the guy I bought from on ebay - stuff came quickly and did the job

The simple answer is no, you don't need and "Defender specific" tools. Generic tools work fine. Do you think garages have a set of tools for every model of car that comes in? They would have a lot of tools

Personally I bought the Difflock crankshaft locking tool and the timing pin / puller kit. Nothing like having the correct tools to hand to make a job straight forward.
Of course you can improvise but I personally didn't see the point, when bought the tools can be used again & again.
