An unexpected bang today that sounded like a cable snapping. obviously it wasn't as the clutch is hydraulic. but it left me with no clutch release. I managed to start in in 1st and then mash up through the gears to get home. there was no sign of imminent failure. I have half a loose pedal then it hits solid half way down. can the release arm pop off and jam? 2004 TD5 defender.

This is another "shame on Land Rover" thing. Series 3 had a nice cast arm/fork with bush in it. Changed to that pressed steel arm in later models.
Do check condition of pivot as well, I had one that had worn to a point.

I personaly think taking the gearbox out (or sliding it back) is easier/better.
have a look on YouTube.
Many of the video's are pushing (sponsored by) LOF and are fitting the HD Single Mass clutch kits.
I wouldn't reccomend that, stay with a Dual Mass flywheel unless you don't mind a bit of gearbox/transmission chatter and even then, if you do insist on a Single Mass, i'd personaly go with Valeo.

Took the slave off for a look. It’s a cast fork so not what I thought. Any ideas? Pedal moves with the slave off. Solid when bolted back on.
However. It spewed all its fluid into the housing after that.
I’m wondering if I’ve got a cylinder seal gone and the pressure was equalising rather than moving the slave. Giving me a solid pedal and no clutch release?
Ordered a new master and slave so let’s see. Master has a slow leak anyway and was empty when it went bang.
