Hi guys
The hazard flasher switch (top of the steering column surround) on my '87 3.5efi has been playing games for a while ie whilst the hazards would switch on turning them off again meant several presses of the button before normal indicator operation was resumed.
The switch has now decided not to press down at all & squirts of WD40 have not solved the problem. The MOT is due in January & apparently non-functional hazards are a major fault.

Has anyone experienced this problem & maybe found a solution?

WD40 Arggh death to switches.. Aeroclene 50 or Servisol contact cleaner/lubricant may do the trick with a good wash out.

Agreed about WD40, but I used it as I feel the mechanism of the switch is sticking due to lack of use (how often does the average owner use the thing) rather than a bad contact problem.
 
If hazard light switch is fitted, then it has to work. There is a date when hazard lights were a compulsory fitment but can't remember what that date is.

I'm sure you are right about the mechanism, but WD40 if it helped at all would be a very short term fix as it dries out and leaves a sticky deposit.
 
If I have to replace the switch, which judging by the images of it on the 'net seems to be incorporated into the complete indicator stalk, how do the wires connect .. push in or do they need to be soldered?

Has anyone done this & can advise if it's a DIY job or needs an auto electrician.
 
Integral part of PRC5072.
Might be an idea to remove the assembly & give it a thorough blasting & flush with an aerosol of contact cleaner.
If that doesn't work then PRC5072 is available new for around £40 incl p&p on ebay & around £30 plus p&p from Paddocks & Craddocks.

Not done one, but I've just had a look at the WSM & it says to disconnect the battery, drop the lower facia panel (drivers foot well) unplug the wiring as appropriate, take off the relevant side of the shroud & the unit is held on by clips with the wiring plugged onto it.
Looks straightforward unplugging & plugging job.

Many thanks for your research, I should be able to manage the task myself as I've had that facia panel down/off more than once in the past.
The car has only covered 63K miles, but of course the aging of 37 year old plastic components is probably the issue here.
