I likes the look of that. Funnily enuff after ordering an extractor, i have managed to borrow a set of them, so orf this morning with timing set and extractors for another go:rolleyes:

Bastid bloody thing - its taken 6 hours to get the cover off.
Tried to remove sheared bolt with Stud extractor (like the one yu linked to, Graham) and..... guess what - it sheared the bolt closer to the cover .
Lots of use of screwdrivers, crowbars, levers of all shapes and sizes managed to free all of the timing cover except for the two bolt fixings (1 bolt & 1 stud actually). Judicious use of heat, wd40, crowbars etc made not the slightest bit of difference, so resorted to drilling the bolt out (leaving stud intact, coz it goes back into block). Drilled the bolt the depth of the timing cover and it still wouldnt free up. Even more use of crowbars and we managed to get the cover and bolt to move enough to get a fine hacksaw blade between the cover and we cut the remaininf shell thru.
Another hour and a half with crowbars, levers etc and WOOHOO, the cover moved on the remaining stud. Another 15 minutes of waggling, rotating, swearing and the cover was off.
All it left now was the remaining section of bolt siezed in the timing case housing.....
More drilling out and we are ready to clean the thread out tomorrow.
Good news tho - the inside of the timing cover is pretty clean, hardly any oil or dust and debris :D; except for tons of steel swarf .
Tomorrow - clening of thread (mebe a drill thru and re-tap) lots of brake/clutch cleaner to clean out the crap and then on to the timing belt. The Timing kit works a treat tho - well worth the £40. :D:D.

The easiest solution... buy an MOT failure... swap engines... weigh the scrap in.

removed drill bit and tapped hole for noo bolt.

Changed timing belt and refitted water pump. stopped then, just got to refit ancilleries, noo belts and refill with coolant.

and then watch for leaks

I know you have sorted it now, but a couple of years ago i snapped a couple of bolts on a cv hub. Loads of drills later i hadn't made an impression on the sodding things, a mate of mine lent me a cobalt tipped left hand drill. Thought he was tacking the mick but the opposite drilling action coupled with the extractor had the bloody things out in minutes.

luckily I had drilled right through the boss with a 5mm drill, before the 6mm drill snapped, so I was able to get a bolt in the back and lever the broken bits out :D.

Bit of luck for you that you had predrilled the hole first before the drill snapped, but don't you just hate it when a job goes tits up on you like that. Glad its sorted.:D

Well done for persevering. Yes the camshaft looks like it was a tooth out (assuming the white mark is the timing mark). Check again to see if there is a notch in the edge of the camshaft sprocket. Looking at your picture again, yes it is a clear punched mark.
Hopefully it is plain sailing from now.
