If you're shopping for really big things, there is an optional tow bar attachment.
The Freelander is fine for the weekly shop, unless you have a football team of course.
For my uses it's fine and there's always the option of a roof box and trailer when more space is needed.
By comparison, the wife's Ford Kuga has a larger boot in terms of volume. However the Freelander will fit the roof bars across the boot width, the Kuga doesn't.
The Freelander is not at all bad if you add in the glove box and door pockets too.
By comparison to my previous D3, the Freelander's boot is tiny however.

I've had 5 Freelander's over the years. Non have suffered from the fish tank in the boot syndrome.

It depends where yer shop. Who's bags we talking?
Sainsbury's I would say 10. Asda are smaller so probably 14. Waitrose 16 as they're even smaller. Top shop would be 6 as their bags are massive, or so Marmaduck told me. Toys R Us would be 4 as their bags are oversize. This is all with the load cover covering the boot space. If you roll that back yer gets 80% more space but can't see out the rear window if yer fills said space. If doing so don't let the bags rub the rear window or you'll damage the rear window heating element.
