Hello forum users, I was wondering if any one could help give me some advice as to whether I should keep my 1998 Freelander XEDI.

Brief History, purchased to vehicle from a reliable friend in May 2006 ( my intro to LandRover) with 119k on the clock and since have completed 26000 trouble free miles on and off road, however....

In the past 3 weeks I have had various probs, new timing belt , new handbrake cable, replacement water pump (due to coolant loss) and the wiring to fuel pump repaired as the vehicle was cutting out. This morning I wake up to find the coolant level below min thus another leakage somewhere as I only checked this 5 days ago.

I love the vehicle to bits as it has some nice customisations and looks brand new.

Should I persevere or this going to be an uphill struggle and I should get rid?

well the cam belts are just servicable items so that nott really a problem other than cost,

check that the leak isnt down to the new water pump u just had fitted, doesnt seem that bad for a car of that mileage

my petrol one was loosing water from cracks in the expansion bottle. Put a new un on n that cured it. The cracks were under the yellow stiker around the lid. Have a look at yours.

Thanks for the advice. I have checked all hoses, but cannot visibly see any leakage nor any signs of water under the vehicle. Expansion bottle seems to be in tact.

Not being an expert on the subject I will have to take it to my new best friend at the garage. He will be sick of the sight of me in the past 3 weeks !!

Just out of interest, what sort of max mileage should you expect to see from a Rover series diesel engine before the vehicle surrounding the car
disintergrates ?

iduf. . . its got er good milage ,now its your shout its gittin time to spend some money on it or get shot, i say get shot un git er td4 doosle. . .yer wint regret it. . . .:)

Easy Mingy, Tinytdi and I have both got 10k plus miles on that and still going strong (touch wood!)! :D

Iduf,
Not sure on max mileage, but the way to look at it is, everything that you swop over for new, is one less thing to go wrong. Mingy is right, the TD4 is a cracking lump, but playing devils advocate, there's plenty of them about with the odd issue...better the devil you know? ;)

Thanks for the advice.

Cashybai you are spot on, I may end up replacing my Freelander with someone else's problems (unless buying new - - No chance on my pay).

I know on some other threads, people some to be highlighting the complexity of the BMW TD4 technology, my fellows engine looks quite jurassic in comparison (by no means different in quality).

I think I shall pull me socks up, get me chequebook out and get ready for one more hit.

See me other posts Duf, I've just bin hit £600 for a new rear Dif...But, assuming thats the original, she's done 145k, so I can't complain...(too much..:( )

Just out of interest, this is from an earlier Fred, Hatters asked me how much me landy had cost me over the time I'd had it. I tend to allow for £1500 per year all in, including tax, insurance & MOT. If you think how much yer average loan/HP'll sting yer, thats quite reasonable considering she's all paid for...

Re: Is this the dreaded VCU problem?
There goes the last of me hairs.....Without lookingat all the bills, I'd guess around £2.5-3k.Fuel pump/starting probs put most of that on, plus normal tyre eating habits.. Having said that tho she'd got 70k miles ont clock, so its not been bad value for the 70k plus I've put on her to date...:)

Re: Is this the dreaded VCU problem?

as yu say - not bad for 70K miles - if yu take that as 5 years running - that about £600 a year - not bad at all. :D

Ming, I think you are right it all about cost, do I buy an old dog new legs or buy a puppy.

Cashybai, I notice your Landys a 98' XEDI, have you thought of moving on to a TD4 or Freelander2 ?

ho ho ho.

I dont think he is capable of moving anywhere at the mo;)

Sorry Cashew - couldnt resist it:D

Cheeky Booger.... , am all rear dif'd up now hatters:D an don't me pocket know it

Duf, Yep, fort about em both, an theres a nice mk2 sat at me local garden centre saying "buy me cashew, buy me, you know you want me" like that choccy advert with the bloke and the doris on the train, bueno jobbies, you know the one........

I digress...I'm the kind of bloke who don't much like swoppin gear, espesh if you know the history of it..Me other motor is a beehem e36 with 215k miles ont clock. She does 400miles a week gettin me to work, it owes me nowt, she's all paid for, and basically, her trade in/resale is zip. I'm better off running her till she falls apart, rather than selling her on and being in hock for someone elses probs...I also don't like the idea of a car losing me a shed load as soon as I drive it off a garage forecourt, and being its a landy, the first of the mk2's are bound to have a snags list as long as yer arm..:p
