P38A abs light/MOT

have just failed the french equivalent of the MOT (controle technique)
reason given : ABS warning does not go out
it most certainly does go out but not immediately. and this is how it has always behaved on my P38.
my question is why does it not go out immediately as on other cars and can anything be done to reduce the interval that the light remains on (to mollify the tester)

It is only a fail if it does not go out when the vehicle speed reached 7 KPH. It will not go out with the vehicle stationary the tester is wrong.

I live in France and have had the same problem. You need to explain to the tester that the light does not go out until the self checks have been performed and the speed reaches 7 to 10 kph. Take a copy of the page of RAVE that describes the function, use Google translate to produce a translation. If the tester still will not accept it, either go elsewhere for another test or threaten to report the matter to the DRIRE.
You should always explain before the test starts about how the the ABS works.
Also make sure the tester knows that the car is full time 4WD or damage will occur if rollers are not used on the axle not being tested. Most CT testers are not familiar with full time 4WD.
 
I queried the use of a single roller brake tester at the place i have gone for 10 years with all my Landys......They use a contra-rotating roller.....one goes one way and the other goes the other way, so the drive is through the Diff and not up to the Transfer Box.

Not over here they don't as they use the rollers to test brake efficiency and side to side balance so the powered rollers have to rotate in the same direction necessitating mobile roller units under the axle not being tested.

hi lads , I had similar problem in a well known Manchester test station wich failed mine in two parts
a) failed on emmissions !!!!!!!
b) failed on ABS light not going out !!!!!
spoke to the tester who basically said I know my job and its failed , he just wouldn't listen ,and said take it away and rectify and bring it back and I will re-test if I have the time !!!!!!
mmmmmmm not being the most patient of people I put it on their car park & proceeded to their office to speak to the owner ,
I had with with me a copy of relevant paperwork from RAVE & the cars handbook relevant to the ABS system & a statement from LPG FITTING COMPANY,
who had forewarned me of what probably would and did happen !!!!! so the car in question was my 2000 v8 thor engine vogue rangerover fitted with a multipoint lpg system .
politely ( not like me ) Asked to speak to the owner , was invited into his office and asked what is the problem , so I explained that his tester hasn't tested it appropriately !!!!!!! mmmmm he calls the tester in who was a bit ****ed off by me going to see the owner . so I calmly asked the fitter if he would like to rectify the problems and I would pay them , saving me going somewhere else ???? the owner sat listening to all this then backs the tester up & says do as tester suggest and come back tomorrow , by this time Im ****ed off , but kept calm , handed the owner the paperwork I took in alongside the lpg companys phone number and said to them ,please read all this it wont take but 2 minutes & ring the number and I will willingly pay for the call in the meantime I told them I will go & wait in the car and await their reaction …. well owner comes out 10 mins later asks for the keys and asked me to wait in his office .. then tester appears a little while later with the keys and a pass certificate . he then in "front of the owner " apologises profusely and admitted he had never ever tested a "rangerover" and certainly never a vechicle with LPG ….. so
all in all he knew nothing about ABS & how it operated and nothing about testing emmissions i.e. the car must be tested in the fuel state it arrived in ,so he had tested in petrol state on his machine .????? moral of story make sure you explain properly before testing & take relevant paperwork with you to back it up... hope this helps others who are ready for their next M-O-T !!!!!!!!! regards Mozz .

They used to use a Tapley, no longer used in the last MOT under the new regs. I always stay with the car to ensure all is OK and I'mm allowed into the inspection area to check over the underside:D

I've always been very impressed with the brakes on the P38. Stamp your foot and you'll be scrabbling on the floor for your teeth, albeit half the members on here probably take theirs out and plonk them in the cubby-hole while driving.
Always found the brakes a bit lacking in feel and bite, I always assumed they were set up like that for off roading.

Not on mine. But I've flushed so much fluid through mine and have new discs and pads all round. At least the rear are new and the fronts were new not so long ago.
