A simple sunday morning job....

Success:D:D:D

The trackrod took 20 minutes to refit, lots of copper grease on the threads, matched the length to the old one so the tracking should be as good as it was.

The damper i took off was totally the wrong unit, it was spring loaded so it self-extended and had "Top" stamped into it, now why whould a horizontal steering damper have a top?? Gawd knows what it was off of, the bushes were a mish-mash of orange, black and yellow ones mixed.

I fitted a new lamp in the missing ABS display too.

The road test was like a breath of fresh air:D:D The rear end with its new roll bar links was much quieter, the steering was smoother and it didn't pull to the right anymore - this must have been the old damper bias:(:(

To top it all off, the ABS light WORKED! perfectly, came on, blinked, went off when i pulled away - perfect. So for the sake of tapping a single sensor in, they removed the dash just to take a lamp out????????

Cant wait to get driving her again;)

Next up is the rear axle oil leak followed by the leaking clutch system followed by the timing belt.

THANKS to all who offered advice, i think this chapter is done.

Happy days mate.

Luckily rear axle leak and clutch are easy jobs (famous last words blah blah blah)

Timing belt however, urgh, DIESEL :(

Yeah, my only reservations are the clutch pushrod coming off the fork and the system failing before i get chance to fix it.

I'm not too worried about the timing belt and if i can get the caliper off, the oil leak should be a doddle;)

Of course i have air con, why make the job easy:rolleyes:

I'm going to try leaving all fluid systems intact, and use a phone camera for getting a good view of the timing marks etc, i really dont want to start the air-lock, overheat, headwarp, gasket failure syndrome going.

I took her to work this morning, to say the difference is amazing is an understatement, she rolls along almost silently now, now squeeks and knocks from the rear and no pulling to the right, i am VERY pleased.

ABS still fine too.

Dave

Just done my cambelt on 300 tdi with aircon-left all the rad etc in place-just be very careful of the rad, maybe cover with a sheet of cardboard or similar-it is close, but not that close.I used a mirror on a stick to check the marks, plus a timing kit.Worst bit was getting the crank nut undone, but breaker bar and starter motor sorted that

Yup regular thread-When i did mine,I put wooden blocks under landy near nearside front wheel then breaker bar on these blocks as a stop.with socket on crank bolt-got in turned key and landy went up in the air about 6 ins-released key and tried again, this time bouncing up and down in drivers seat-that did it.I had already tried using breaker bar against chassis as a stop, but not enough oomph for mine it was bloody tight-if you do the blocks way, make sure you have enough so that breaker bar cannot jump over when landy lifts up-breaker bar flying round doesn't bear thinking about. Also made sure engine had just run so battery is nice and lively-good luck.

And make sure your oil cooler pipes are out of the way of thd breaker, I managed to put a kink in one of mine when turning engine over with a bar on the crank

Hmmm, i'm thinking to make up a locking tool i reckon, i like being in full control of stuff. I do model engineering for a hobby when not under the landy, so i've got a garage full of equipment, might as well use it.

As i see it, its a ring with four bolt holes and a bar welded to it, shouldnt be too hard.

Sunday mornings are about to get more intresting for me.... I'm moving to a house with a HUGE drive! At mo got nothing if I want to work on the Disco I have to do it wherever it happens to be parked but from Monday a drive!

Its bigger enough to get another Disco on as well as mine & the Mrs's Pug 106.....

I can feel a project coming on after Christmas But don't tll the Mrs!

Just so I aint gone to far off topic, just replaced me hub seals (again!) so no more back axel leak!

I think that will be good for doing it back up-but to get it undone you are going to need to weld a scaffold pole on!

Hey Dave,

Good luck finding the time to do any work on your other hobbies now you are into your Disco.

I think mine gets very jealous sometimes:

(on phone to girlfriend) "hi, how are you, shall we go out tonight? I fancy spending some time away from this BLOODY CAR..."

(disco in background) "drip, drip, DRIP, DRIP, broken! MUHAHAHAHA!"

Honeslty, that's the way I picture it actually happening...!

Yes they can be a bit "needy" some times, i'm doing a rear hub oil seal today, lets see how long it takes for that job to expand!

If i have time i'll do the clutch slave and damper as well 'cos there's a leak there somewhere, lots of possibility for that job to get worse!

After me spending all week underneath it doing the rod-ends and rear roll bar links, the wife wants to know when it'll be running like a normal car :) When i finished laughing i said "probably never". I thought about that a minute but after a short drive in her the landy 'grin' returned and all was well, you get attached to them very quickly.

Gotta love a landy.
